As Nigeria looks toward the 2027 general elections, local law enforcement and civic
organizations are beginning to align on the importance of voter preparedness. In
a recent meeting at the State Police Headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, Ogun State
Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, highlighted the necessity of comprehensive
voter education to ensure a robust democratic process.

## The Role of Civic Sensitization

CP Ojajuni’s comments came during a visit from the Iyawo Alhaji Itoku Community &
Development Initiative, a group focused on grassroots advocacy. The Commissioner
specifically lauded the group’s ongoing project, titled ‘Operation Protect Your
PVC Campaign,’ which carries the theme ‘From Registration to Protection – PVC Na
Your Power.’ This campaign is designed to educate market women, youth populations,
and various community members on the practical aspects of obtaining and safeguarding
their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs).

According to the Commissioner, such initiatives are essential for deepening democratic
participation. He noted that the timing of these enlightenment efforts is particularly
significant as the nation prepares for the next electoral cycle.

## Community Policing and Civic Engagement

During the meeting, the Iyawo Alhaji Itoku Community & Development Initiative, led
by founder Comrade Oladunni Sodipo, presented CP Ojajuni with the Peace and Service
Leadership Award. The group stated that the award was in recognition of the Commissioner’s
dedication to maintaining security and fostering community policing within Ogun
State.

Comrade Sodipo outlined the organization’s broader mission, which includes:

 * Market-based sensitization programs
 * Youth empowerment initiatives
 * Civic education outreach

The Commissioner expressed his appreciation for the group’s advocacy, describing
their objectives as noble and vital for the current political climate. He further
assured the organization of the Command’s support for their activities, emphasizing
that collaboration between security agencies and civic groups is a key component
of a stable electoral environment.

## Looking Toward 2027

While the specific logistical details of the 2027 election cycle remain subject
to the official guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),
the focus on early voter education suggests a proactive approach by local stakeholders.
By targeting specific demographics such as market women and youth, the initiative
aims to reduce barriers to voting and ensure that citizens are equipped with the
necessary documentation to exercise their franchise.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to continue these efforts, reflecting
a growing trend of civil society organizations taking an active role in preparing
the electorate for upcoming national exercises.
