Ogun 2027: PDP Chieftain Rejects Gubernatorial Bid, Alleges Identity Fraud by Political Rivals
Topa Olusegun Peter, a PDP chieftain in Ogun State, has publicly denied running for governor in 2027, accusing local APC figures of fraudulently using his name.
A community leader and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in Ogun State, Topa Olusegun Peter, has dismissed reports claiming he entered the race for the state’s 2027 governorship election. Speaking at a press conference in Abeokuta, Peter stated that he never bought nomination paperwork, signed candidacy documents, or authorized any representative to submit filings on his behalf, according to a report by Daily Post Nigeria.
Allegations of Rival Party Involvement
Peter, who serves as the Baale of Olorunsogo, Ilara in the Imeko-Afon Local Government Area, claimed that his personal identity was misused without his consent following a political disagreement. As reported by Daily Post Nigeria, Peter accused local figures in the All Progressives Congress (APC), specifically Imeko-Afon APC Chairman Ramoni Adebolu, of orchestrating the unauthorized candidacy.
According to Peter’s account, APC officials had previously invited him to a gathering in Ilara, where they proposed an unspecified political role under the PDP banner. Peter said he turned down the overture immediately, arguing that any legitimate role could only come from his own party. When reports subsequently surfaced in national newspapers listing him as an official PDP gubernatorial aspirant, Peter said he confronted Adebolu over the matter.
Peter alleged that during this exchange, the APC local chairman urged him to remain calm and promised monetary compensation, a vehicle, and a major government post once Senator Solomon Adeola, commonly known as Yayi, emerged as the APC gubernatorial candidate. Peter emphasized that he refused the offers and accepted no money.
Disowning Formal Petitions to INEC
The controversy also extends to formal legal documents directed to electoral regulators. A petition had reportedly been submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by a lawyer identified as Anderson Asemota of Neplus Ultra Attorneys, demanding that the agency publish Peter’s name as a recognized aspirant within a 48-hour window.
Peter formally distanced himself from the petition, asserting that he has never spoken with or met Asemota, nor instructed him to act on his behalf. He petitioned INEC directly to disregard any submissions or nomination documents filed under his name and urged electoral officials to investigate how his credentials were appropriated.
Security Concerns and Party Alignment
Beyond the administrative dispute, Peter expressed anxiety regarding personal safety. He appealed to Nigerian security organizations and the general public to intervene, monitor the situation, and guarantee security for his household amid the ongoing tension.
Reaffirming his political affiliation, Peter maintained that he has stayed loyal to the PDP since 1998 without defecting. He noted that he supervised his local ward during the PDP gubernatorial primary on May 24, 2026, which affirmed Hon. Ladi Adebutu as the party’s sole candidate. Peter urged both electoral authorities and voters to consider any materials presenting him as an active contestant entirely illegitimate.
