NPFL Matchday 9: Kwara United and Abia Warriors Battle to 1-1 Stalemate

Olamide

Kwara United and Abia Warriors shared the points in a 1-1 draw in Ilorin during matchday nine of the Nigeria Premier Football League.

Action in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) matchday nine got underway on Saturday with shared points across fixtures, highlighted by a 1-1 draw between Kwara United and Abia Warriors in Ilorin, according to a report by Daily Post Nigeria.

How the Ilorin Encounter Unfolded

Playing on their home turf in Ilorin, Kwara United captured the initial momentum late in the opening period. Attacker Ali Ferinyaro broke the deadlock approximately 34 minutes into the contest, giving the hosts a 1-0 advantage that held through the remainder of the first half.

Abia Warriors quickly countered after returning from the break. Forward Emmanuel Nnaji found the net eight minutes into the second half, restoring parity at 1-1. Despite subsequent efforts from both sides to secure a late breakthrough, neither team managed to alter the scoreline before the final whistle, leaving both clubs with a single point from the fixture.

Table Positions Following the Draw

The shared outcome keeps both teams in the middle-to-lower tiers of the current domestic standings after nine rounds of competition. Daily Post Nigeria reported that Kwara United sits in 11th position on the NPFL table, with a tally of 11 points gathered from their first nine matches.

Abia Warriors occupied 15th position following the weekend result, having also contested nine matches. While securing an away point provides a useful defensive foundation on the road, both clubs will face ongoing pressure to convert draws into victories as the league campaign advances toward its mid-season stage.

Parallel Result at Pantami Stadium

The encounter in Ilorin mirrored developments elsewhere on Saturday afternoon. Over at Pantami Stadium, Doma United and Kun Khalifat FC also finished with an identical 1-1 scoreline.

In that clash, Kun Khalifat FC opened the scoring away from home in the 54th minute. The lead, however, was brief; Tijani Azeez responded for Doma United merely four minutes later in the 58th minute to level the match and guarantee that the hosts did not walk away empty-handed.

Looking Ahead

Matchday nine action concludes with five additional NPFL fixtures scheduled to take place on Sunday. Saturday’s dual draws demonstrate the tightly contested nature of early-season fixtures across the division, where margins remain exceptionally narrow and league positioning shifts with nearly every weekend round.
