NPFL: Enyimba Secures Crucial 1-0 Win Over Kun Khalifat to Escape Relegation Zone

A first-half strike from Tobi Iyanda earned Enyimba a vital 1-0 victory over Kun Khalifat in Aba, lifting the side out of the league's bottom four.

Enyimba climbed out of the relegation zone on Sunday following a tightly contested 1-0 victory against regional rivals Kun Khalifat in Matchday 11 of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). According to an official match report filed from Aba by Sanipe Damiete for the league, the solitary goal was enough to secure three vital points for the home side in what was characterized as a heated southeastern derby.

Early Breakthrough and Missed Opportunities

Entering the fixture under significant pressure, Enyimba had been mired in the bottom four and had failed to overcome Kun Khalifat in two prior attempts. However, the hosts found momentum early in the match. In the 15th minute, an attacking sequence down the right flank culminated in a low cross into the penalty area from Obichere Odinaka, which forward Tobi Iyanda finished to put Enyimba ahead.

The momentum appeared to stay with Enyimba just three minutes later. Under pressure, a Kun Khalifat defender handled a cross inside the box, prompting the referee to award a penalty. Forward Ifeanyi Ihemekwele stepped up to take the spot-kick, but Kun Khalifat goalkeeper Ekwujuru Esomchi dove correctly to his right to make the save. Ihemekwele, who had struggled to retain possession during his time on the pitch, was later substituted in the second half.

Defensive Hold and Standings Impact

Despite conceding the early goal and conceding a penalty, Kun Khalifat continued to push for an equalizer throughout the remainder of the fixture. The NPFL report noted that the visitors created several opportunities to level the score but failed to convert them, while Enyimba was unable to add an insurance goal to widen the margin.

The result reshuffles the lower tier of the NPFL standings. With the three points earned in Aba, Enyimba moved up to 16th place, successfully escaping the bottom four. Kun Khalifat sits just one position above them in 15th place as both sides look to solidify their domestic campaigns heading into the next round of fixtures.
