The Nigerian U-17 women’s national team, known as the Flamingos, achieved a monumental
milestone in international football this past Saturday. By defeating Japan 2-1 in
the final held in Rabat, the team secured the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title,
marking the first time an African nation has ever won the competition.

## A Decisive Performance in Rabat

The final match saw a tactical and determined performance from the Nigerian squad,
coached by Akeem Busari. The scoring opened six minutes before halftime when Awawu
Bashiru delivered a looping strike to put Nigeria in front. The momentum carried
into the second half, with Oluebube Umejiaku extending the lead to 2-0 just two
minutes after the break.

Japan attempted a late comeback, with Fuki Ito finding the back of the net 10 minutes
before the final whistle. However, the Nigerian defense remained resilient, successfully
holding off the Japanese attack to secure the historic win.

## Celebrations and Recognition

The victory has drawn widespread acclaim, including from senior national team leadership.
Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade expressed her pride in the team’s achievement
via social media. In a statement reported by _Daily Post Nigeria_, Ajibade wrote,“
WORLD CHAMPIONS! You made history, and you made all of Nigeria proud. I’m so proud
of every one of you. The future of Nigerian football is here. Congratulations, Flamingos.”

## Context of the Achievement

While the 2026 tournament has concluded with Nigeria taking the top spot, the win
represents a significant shift in the landscape of youth women’s football. Historically,
the tournament has been dominated by teams from Europe, Asia, and South America.
Nigeria’s success in Rabat serves as a landmark moment for the development of the
women’s game within the African continent.

As of this report, specific details regarding the team’s homecoming celebrations
or individual tournament awards beyond the match result have not been publicly disclosed
by FIFA or the Nigeria Football Federation.

### Conclusion

The Flamingos’ triumph in the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup is a testament to
the growing talent within Nigerian youth football. By overcoming Japan in a high-
stakes final, the squad has not only secured a world title but has also set a new
precedent for African teams on the global stage.
