Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, known as the Flamingos, stands on the precipice
of history as they prepare to face Japan in the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World
Cup in Morocco. The team has already secured a milestone by becoming the first African
side to reach the final of this prestigious competition.

## A Journey of Resilience

The path to the final was not without its obstacles. According to reports from _Channels
Television_, the Flamingos faced a challenging start to the tournament, suffering
a 2-1 defeat to Poland in their opening Group B match. However, the squad demonstrated
significant resilience, rebounding to secure five consecutive victories against
Puerto Rico, DPR Korea, Mexico, Venezuela, and Brazil.

The team’s 3-1 victory over Brazil in the semi-final solidified their place in the
championship match, keeping Nigeria’s hopes of a first-ever U-17 World Cup title
alive.

## Psychological Preparation and Coaching

Head coach Akeem Busari attributed the team’s turnaround following their opening
loss to a focus on psychological guidance and a shift in player attitude. Speaking
to FIFA, Busari noted the importance of counseling the young athletes to help them
regain confidence and adhere to the team’s game plan.

> “We needed to change our attitude and character, but because of their age, we
> just needed to talk to them, to counsel them, and those are the points that make
> the difference,” Busari stated.

Busari emphasized that while the team is aware of Japan’s quality, the final represents
a unique challenge. He stressed that the outcome will depend on the mentality and
character the players bring to the pitch, noting that the job is not finished simply
by reaching the final stage.

## The Weight of History

For captain Harmony Chidi, the prospect of lifting the trophy represents more than
just a personal achievement; it is a moment that would resonate across Nigeria and
the African continent. Describing the final as a dream, Chidi expressed the collective
pride of the players, coaching staff, and the nation.

“I think it would be a great thing, a joy, and would never be forgotten in life,”
Chidi told FIFA. “Winning would be something myself, my country, my team-mates,
our coaches, and everybody would be proud of.”

## Looking Ahead

As the Flamingos prepare for the final, the focus remains on maintaining the momentum
that brought them to this stage. Coach Busari highlighted the players as the “gladiators”
responsible for the team’s success, acknowledging that while a victory would be
a significant milestone for his career and for African football, the credit belongs
to the squad’s dedication.

With the final match approaching, the team continues to emphasize the need for discipline
and focus, aiming to complete their historic run by securing the title for the first
time.
