Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, has secured a spot in the semi-
finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup following a hard-fought 1-0 victory
against Venezuela on Sunday. The win marks a significant milestone in the team’s
tournament journey, positioning them among the final four contenders for the global
title.

## A Decisive Moment in Rabat

The match remained deadlocked for the vast majority of regulation time, despite
persistent offensive efforts from the Nigerian side. Players including Kanyinsola
Yusuf, Mary Dunstan, Tosin Rafiu, and Oluebube Umejiaku consistently pressured the
Venezuelan defense throughout the encounter. The breakthrough finally arrived in
the 89th minute when Azeezat Oduntan successfully converted a penalty kick, providing
the decisive goal that ultimately decided the match.

Venezuela, which had remained competitive throughout the game, attempted to rally
in the final minutes. Players Astrid Granadillo and Abril Alejo created late-game
opportunities to equalize, but the Nigerian defense held firm through eight minutes
of stoppage time to preserve the clean sheet and the narrow lead.

## Tournament Trajectory

The Flamingos’ progression to the semi-finals represents a notable recovery following
a challenging start to the tournament. According to Channels Television, the team
opened their campaign with a 2-1 loss to Poland. Since that initial setback, the
squad has demonstrated resilience by securing three consecutive victories: a 2-0
win over Puerto Rico, a 3-1 upset against defending champions North Korea, and a
2-1 result against Mexico.

## Looking Ahead to the Semi-Finals

Nigeria is now scheduled to face Brazil in the semi-final round. Brazil earned their
place in the final four after a 2-1 comeback victory against China in their own
quarter-final match. The upcoming semi-final encounter is set to take place on Wednesday,
November 4, at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat.

As the tournament reaches its final stages, the Flamingos’ performance continues
to draw attention for their ability to overcome early deficits and maintain defensive
discipline under pressure. With a match against a formidable Brazilian side looming,
the Nigerian team will look to carry the momentum from their quarter-final success
into their pursuit of a place in the championship final.
