Nigerian Regulatory Agencies Issue Stern Warning to Influencers Over Fraudulent Endorsements

Olamide

Nigeria's top anti-corruption and consumer protection agencies have issued a joint warning to celebrities and social media influencers, stating they will be held legally accountable for promoting fraudulent products and investment schemes.

In a significant move to curb the rising tide of financial fraud and consumer exploitation, three major Nigerian regulatory bodies—the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC)—have issued a collective warning to celebrities and social media influencers. The agencies declared that those who lend their platforms to promote fraudulent products, Ponzi schemes, and unregistered services will face legal consequences.

The Scope of the Crackdown

The warning was delivered during a joint stakeholder meeting held in Abuja on Friday. The agencies highlighted a growing trend where popular figures use their influence to endorse dubious investment platforms and health products, often resulting in significant financial losses for the public. According to the agencies, Nigerians have collectively lost billions of naira due to trust placed in celebrity-backed advertisements.

Accountability for Endorsements

Tunji Bello, the Executive Vice Chairman of the FCCPC, emphasized that celebrities can no longer use ignorance as a defense when the products they promote turn out to be fraudulent.

If you promote a fraudulent product, you are liable. Your face, your voice, your influence was used to deceive people. You will be held accountable.

Representing the EFCC, Chairman Ola Olukoyede noted that the agency has observed a pattern of skit makers, musicians, and actors promoting crypto scams and predatory loan applications. He stated that influencers who participate in these activities will be treated as accomplices, as their endorsement serves as a catalyst for the abuse of public trust.

Regulatory Guidance and Due Diligence

The ICPC further noted that these endorsements not only facilitate financial loss but also undermine consumer confidence and contribute to broader corruption. To mitigate these risks, the agencies have provided the following guidance for influencers and the public:

  • Due Diligence: Celebrities are urged to verify the legitimacy of products and services with relevant regulatory bodies, including NAFDAC, the SEC, and the FCCPC, before entering into endorsement agreements.
  • Public Vigilance: The agencies encouraged citizens to report suspicious advertisements, particularly those that promise returns or benefits that appear too good to be true.

This warning follows a series of public outcries regarding failed investment schemes and health complications arising from the use of unverified skincare products promoted by high-profile individuals. The agencies did not provide specific details on the number of pending investigations or the timeline for potential prosecutions, but the joint nature of the announcement signals a coordinated effort to increase oversight in the digital marketing space.

Conclusion

The joint stance by the ICPC, EFCC, and FCCPC marks a shift toward greater accountability for those who monetize their influence. By framing celebrity endorsements as a potential legal liability, the government aims to protect consumers from the financial and health-related damages associated with deceptive marketing practices. As the regulatory environment tightens, the onus is now on content creators to exercise greater scrutiny regarding the brands and schemes they choose to promote.
