Government officials and security experts are calling on the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations to prioritize ethical communication and voter education to ensure a peaceful electoral process.

As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, stakeholders are increasingly focusing on the role of communication professionals in maintaining social stability. During the second edition of the Owanbe Nite, hosted by the Ogun State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) in Abeokuta, government officials and security representatives emphasized the need for responsible political engagement.

The Call for Ethical Communication

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, represented by the Head of Service, Mr. Iskeel Saka, issued a direct appeal to NIPR members to utilize their professional skills to mitigate the spread of misinformation and hate speech. According to the Daily Post Nigeria, the Governor highlighted that the institute’s expertise is essential for fostering a credible electoral environment. He specifically urged practitioners, particularly those within the civil service, to uphold high ethical standards and prioritize issue-based political discourse.

The Role of PR in Strengthening Democracy

Mrs. Oluwaseun Boye, the State Chairman of the NIPR, echoed these sentiments, noting that the responsibility of public relations professionals extends beyond traditional reputation management. She argued that in the current political climate, practitioners must act as guardians of public trust. Her address emphasized several key objectives for the profession:

  • Promoting issue-based campaigns rather than personality-driven attacks.
  • Actively countering disinformation and misinformation.
  • Fostering constructive dialogue between political actors and the citizenry.
  • Encouraging tolerance and respect for diverse political perspectives.

Boye stated that democracy is most effective when citizens are well-informed and when communication serves to bridge societal divides rather than deepen them.

Security Perspectives on Electoral Integrity

The event also featured insights from the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations for the Delta State Police Command, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi. He underscored that the NIPR has a critical function in sustaining democratic processes through targeted advocacy and voter education. Adejobi specifically called for the institute to lead campaigns against political thuggery, vandalism, and violence directed at opposition parties.

He suggested that the NIPR should take an active role in organizing seminars and public forums to engage political stakeholders, leaders, and supporters. By facilitating these discussions, the institute aims to promote a peaceful atmosphere conducive to a credible election.

Conclusion

The consensus among the speakers at the Owanbe Nite event is that the 2027 election cycle requires a proactive approach from communication experts. By focusing on ethical standards, voter education, and the rejection of inflammatory rhetoric, the NIPR is being positioned as a central pillar in the effort to maintain national stability and democratic integrity in Nigeria.
