Nigerian Military Reports 73% Decline in Security Incidents for October
The Defence Headquarters has announced a significant reduction in operational attacks across Nigeria, citing a 73.3% drop in incidents compared to September 2026.
The Nigerian Defence Headquarters has reported a substantial decrease in security incidents across the country’s various military theatres of operation. According to data released by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, the total number of attacks fell by 73.3 per cent in October 2026 compared to the previous month.
Operational Data and Trends
Official figures provided by the military indicate that there were 98 recorded attacks in October, a sharp decline from the 367 incidents documented in September. This represents a reduction of 269 attacks within a single month. The military attributes this shift to sustained operational efforts by troops stationed across the nation.
A breakdown of the October incidents by theatre reveals the following distribution:
- Operation Enduring Peace: 29 attacks
- Operation Hadin Kai: 27 attacks
- Operation Fansan Yamma: 24 attacks
- Operation Whirl Stroke: 12 attacks
- Operation Udo Ka: 4 attacks
- Operation Delta Safe: 1 attack
- Operation Savannah Shield: 1 attack
In comparison, September saw significantly higher activity, particularly within Operation Enduring Peace, which recorded 147 attacks, and Operation Fansan Yamma, which recorded 115.
Neutralizations, Arrests, and Recoveries
Despite the decrease in the frequency of attacks, the military reported continued kinetic engagement. Throughout October, the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) neutralized over 217 terrorists and criminals and apprehended 333 suspects. Furthermore, 349 individuals who had been kidnapped were successfully rescued by troops.
The military also reported the following logistical successes:
- Surrenders: 70 insurgents surrendered to military personnel.
- Weaponry: 105 arms and 3,174 rounds of ammunition were recovered.
- Anti-Oil Theft Operations: Troops recovered 756,837 litres of stolen crude oil products and dismantled 49 illegal refining sites.
Leadership Response and Future Outlook
Major General Onoja noted that troops have been instructed to respond to all threats with superior firepower and tactical maneuvers. However, the military command acknowledged the ongoing challenges, specifically expressing condolences to the residents of Taraba State following a lethal attack in Binari, Karim Lamido Local Government Area, on October 23.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, has assured the public that efforts to apprehend those responsible for the Taraba incident are underway. General Oluyede emphasized the necessity of stronger intelligence sharing among security agencies and urged community leaders to report suspicious activities via the military’s toll-free line, 193.
Looking ahead, the military leadership has cautioned troops against complacency as the festive season approaches. Personnel have been reminded to maintain discipline, adhere strictly to the rules of engagement, and uphold human rights standards during their operations.
Conclusion
While the 73.3 per cent reduction in attacks marks a notable shift in the security landscape for October, the military remains engaged in active operations against various criminal elements. The success of these efforts, according to the Defence Headquarters, relies on a combination of tactical military response and continued cooperation from the civilian population.
