Nigeria-US Cybercrime Partnership Leads to 41 Extraditions

Olamide

A collaborative effort between the EFCC and the FBI has resulted in 41 extraditions since 2022, marking a significant escalation in the fight against transnational cybercrime, including sextortion and romance scams.

A sustained partnership between Nigerian and United States law enforcement agencies has resulted in the extradition of 41 individuals linked to cybercrime since 2022, according to a recent statement from the U.S. Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria. The collaboration, primarily involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), represents a marked increase in judicial cooperation compared to the previous decade.

A Shift in Enforcement Intensity

Data provided by the U.S. government indicates that between 2012 and 2021, the two nations recorded a total of four arrests and five extraditions. The jump to 41 extraditions since 2022—including five completed in 2026—highlights a more aggressive approach to transnational cyber-prosecutions. This update followed a visit to Abuja by Michael Gonzales, the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, who met with Nigerian officials during the country’s Cybercrime Awareness Week.

Focus on Sextortion and Romance Scams

A primary driver of this heightened cooperation is the rise of financially motivated sextortion, which the U.S. government describes as a growing threat to minors. According to the U.S. statement, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children received over 50,000 reports of such crimes in 2025 alone. The FBI identified Nigeria, parts of West Africa, and Southeast Asia as regions where these networks are particularly active.

In August 2026, Nigeria extradited two individuals to the U.S. to face charges related to sextortion cases involving American minors who died by suicide. Beyond sextortion, the joint efforts also target romance scams, which the U.S. authorities note can result in the total loss of a victim’s life savings and retirement funds.

Broadening the Scope of Cooperation

The U.S. statement emphasized that the next phase of the partnership aims to move beyond individual case-by-case extraditions. Officials are prioritizing the dismantling of criminal networks and the disruption of the financial infrastructure that supports these illicit activities. To achieve this, the U.S. is calling for:

  • Enhanced information sharing between agencies.
  • Faster investigation of cyber and financial intelligence.
  • Increased public awareness campaigns.
  • Strengthened investigative and prosecutorial capacity.

The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre has already initiated a nationwide campaign focused on cyber-hygiene, targeting threats such as phishing, identity theft, and business email compromise.

A Wider Security Framework

This cyber-focused collaboration is part of a broader security dialogue between the two nations. High-level engagements have occurred throughout 2025 and 2026, involving figures such as National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and various U.S. officials, including Vice President JD Vance. These meetings have covered a range of topics, including counterterrorism, intelligence sharing, and regional security.

While the U.S. government praised the EFCC for its record in asset recovery and high-profile prosecutions, the long-term success of these efforts remains dependent on the continued synchronization of legal and investigative processes between the two countries. Further details regarding the specific identities of those extradited or the status of ongoing investigations were not disclosed in the official statement.
