NCDC Confirms Negative Ebola Results for Suspected Cases in Adamawa
Health authorities have cleared two individuals in Adamawa State of Ebola Virus Disease following rigorous laboratory testing, maintaining that the national case count remains unchanged.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has officially announced that two suspected cases of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Adamawa State have tested negative. The agency confirmed that after two rounds of laboratory analysis, the individuals do not have the virus, providing relief to health officials monitoring the situation.
Context of the Investigation
According to a statement released by the NCDC Director-General, Dr. Jide Idris, the Adamawa State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre was alerted to the suspected cases on the morning of October 30, 2026. The individuals involved had presented with symptoms often associated with Ebola, prompting immediate isolation and the initiation of standard precautionary protocols to prevent potential spread.
Dr. Idris commended the Adamawa State Commissioner for Health and the local response team for their rapid intervention. The NCDC has pledged to continue providing technical support to the state to ensure that public health response operations remain robust.
Current Status of Ebola in Nigeria
The NCDC clarified that the negative results in Adamawa mean that the previously confirmed case of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) remains the only laboratory-confirmed infection in the country. That specific case involved a traveler arriving in Nigeria from Uganda.
The suspicion in Adamawa had initially heightened public anxiety, given the ongoing vigilance following the FCT case. However, the NCDC emphasized that there is no evidence of the disease spreading to Adamawa State.
Public Health Guidance
Dr. Idris urged the public to remain calm and to refrain from circulating unverified reports or speculation. The agency stressed the importance of relying exclusively on official government communication channels for updates regarding the health situation.
The NCDC also reiterated the clinical profile of Ebola, noting that it is a serious infectious disease that requires rapid identification and specialized care. The agency advised that anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, severe headache, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhea, or unexplained bleeding should:
- Seek immediate medical attention at a healthcare facility.
- Disclose any relevant travel or contact history to medical staff.
- Avoid self-medication, which can complicate diagnosis and treatment.
The NCDC maintains that it will continue to monitor the situation in collaboration with state governments and other stakeholders. The agency remains committed to early detection and evidence-based interventions to protect the national population.
