Mourinho Credits Tactical Selection for Real Madrid’s El Clásico Success

Following Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Barcelona at the Camp Nou this past Sunday, manager José Mourinho drew attention to the individual defensive performance of Marc Cucurella. In comments reported by Daily Post Nigeria, Mourinho praised the left-back for his role in containing Barcelona’s young winger, Lamine Yamal, throughout the 90-minute fixture.

A Strategic Defensive Assignment

Mourinho explained that the decision to start Cucurella over Álvaro Carreras was a deliberate tactical choice aimed at neutralizing the specific threat posed by Yamal. According to the manager, the assignment was among the most demanding of the season, given Yamal’s technical ability and tactical awareness.

“The kid is very good and difficult because, besides being good, he’s clever,” Mourinho stated, referencing the challenges Yamal presented during the match. Mourinho noted that the Barcelona winger attempted to provoke Cucurella into receiving a yellow card, but the defender maintained his composure throughout the contest.

The Importance of Squad Rotation

The manager emphasized that the effectiveness of his defensive line was supported by a broader strategy of player rotation. By utilizing both Cucurella and Carreras across different fixtures, Mourinho believes he has been able to keep his squad both physically prepared and mentally sharp.

“We have two top-level left-backs, which also allows me to manage playing time a bit,” Mourinho said. He noted that Carreras’s participation in the previous Wednesday fixture allowed Cucurella to enter the El Clásico with optimal focus and physical conditioning.

Collective Performance

While Mourinho singled out Cucurella for his individual resilience against a challenging opponent, he also framed the result as a product of collective effort. The 2-1 victory at the Camp Nou serves as a significant result for Real Madrid, with the manager suggesting that the team’s ability to execute specific defensive plans was central to the outcome.

Information regarding the specific tactical instructions given to other members of the Real Madrid squad, or details regarding Barcelona’s internal assessment of the match, was not provided in the source report. The focus remains on the manager’s satisfaction with the defensive stability provided by his left-back rotation policy.

Conclusion

José Mourinho’s post-match comments highlight the importance of depth and strategic selection in high-stakes matches like El Clásico. By successfully managing his personnel, the Real Madrid manager was able to mitigate the influence of one of Barcelona’s most potent attacking threats, securing a crucial win on the road.
