Minister Tegbe Outlines Strategic Roadmap for Nigeria’s Power Grid Stability

Olamide

Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe has introduced a new framework aimed at stabilizing Nigeria's electricity grid and attracting investment, focusing on economic corridors and sector liquidity.

At the opening of the Nigeria Energy Leadership Summit 2026 in Lagos, Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe unveiled a comprehensive roadmap intended to stabilize the nation’s electricity grid. The strategy, presented under the theme “Strengthening Power Delivery Through Execution, Coordination and Performance,” marks a shift in government policy toward measurable improvements in power supply and market sustainability.

Core Strategic Priorities

According to the Daily Post Nigeria, Minister Tegbe identified four primary pillars for the ministry’s current agenda:

  • Enhancing designated energy zones.
  • Strengthening sector liquidity and long-term sustainability.
  • Optimizing existing power assets.
  • Expanding infrastructure to meet projected future demand.

The minister noted that the framework is designed to address systemic constraints spanning generation, transmission, and distribution. By coordinating these areas, the government aims to ensure that capital investments result in more reliable electricity for residential, commercial, and industrial consumers.

Targeting Economic Energy Corridors

A central component of the roadmap is the identification of three priority economic energy corridors: Lagos–Ogun, Benin–Enugu–Port Harcourt, and Abuja–Kaduna–Kano. The strategy seeks to synchronize generation capacity with transmission infrastructure and distribution readiness within these high-demand regions to bolster industrial productivity.

Addressing Financial and Operational Challenges

Tegbe acknowledged that the power sector faces significant hurdles, including gas supply limitations, aging transmission infrastructure, and high distribution losses. To mitigate these, the government continues to pursue initiatives such as the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI), the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DSRP), and the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF).

Financial stability remains a critical concern. The minister reported that the government has addressed a portion of the sector’s legacy liabilities, paying ₦1.23 trillion out of an estimated ₦3.3 trillion. Efforts are also underway to identify and block financial leakages to prevent the accumulation of further debt.

Summit Objectives

The Nigeria Energy Leadership Summit and Exhibition 2026, held at the Landmark Centre in Lagos from October 27 to 29, serves as a platform for industry stakeholders, technology providers, and energy firms to discuss investment opportunities. The minister emphasized that these reforms are aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” with the ultimate goal of fostering business growth, job creation, and industrial development across the country.

Conclusion

While the roadmap provides a clear set of priorities for the power sector, the success of these initiatives will depend on the effective execution of the proposed infrastructure expansions and the continued resolution of sector liabilities. As the summit continues, stakeholders will look for further details on the timelines and specific funding mechanisms required to achieve these ambitious energy goals.
