University students in Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania, initiated a lecture
boycott on Tuesday, leaving the campus of Al Aasriya University—the nation’s largest
higher education institution—largely deserted. The action follows a series of escalating
demonstrations organized by a coalition known as the “Student Front,” which includes
various student unions.

## The Core Grievances

According to reports from AFP, the primary catalyst for the protests is a significant
hike in the cost of state-subsidized transport. Students stated that the price for
these services has risen from 5 ouguiyas (approximately $0.13) to 30 ouguiyas (approximately
$0.75). Beyond the financial burden of commuting, the protesters are calling for
an expansion of bus services and broader improvements to their living and study
environments.

## Escalation and Government Response

The protest movement has gained momentum since last Friday, with the Student Front
coordinating strikes, sit-ins, and marches to pressure authorities for what they
describe as “concrete responses” to their demands. The situation turned confrontational
on Monday when police utilized tear gas and batons to disperse students gathering
on and around the university campus.

In response to the unrest, the Mauritanian Ministry of Higher Education has acknowledged
the challenges facing the university system. The ministry cited the rising number
of students as a contributing factor to current pressures on infrastructure. Officials
stated that the government has already taken steps to increase the availability
of bus services to accommodate the student population.

## Current Status

As of Tuesday, the boycott remained in effect, signaling a continued impasse between
the student body and the government. Information regarding specific upcoming negotiations
or further government policy adjustments was not available at the time of reporting.
The Student Front continues to advocate for systemic changes to address the quality
of life for students at Al Aasriya University.

### Conclusion

The protests in Nouakchott highlight the ongoing tensions between student populations
and administrative authorities regarding the affordability and accessibility of
public services. As the boycott continues, the focus remains on whether the government
will offer further concessions to address the concerns raised by the student unions.
