As the football world turns its attention toward the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony,
German legend Lothar Matthäus has narrowed his focus to two specific candidates.
In a recent discussion with the news agency Deutsche Presse-Agentur, the 65-year-
old former midfielder argued that the award should be contested exclusively by Bayern
Munich teammates Harry Kane and Michael Olise.

## A Focus on Recent Performance

Matthäus emphasized that his selection process is strictly limited to the previous
season’s output, which he believes is the only relevant metric for the prestigious
individual honor. According to the Daily Post Nigeria, Matthäus stated, “When I
assess this period, which is the only period that should be assessed, then there
are only two for me. They both play for Bayern Munich. Harry Kane and Michael Olise,
and nobody else.”

## The Competitive Landscape

While Matthäus has expressed a firm preference for the Bayern Munich pair, they
are part of a broader field of 30 nominees currently shortlisted for the award.
The competition remains intense, with several high-profile players expected to challenge
for the trophy. Notable rivals include:

 * **Lamine Yamal:** The Barcelona prodigy, who has seen a meteoric rise in his
   professional career.
 * **Kylian Mbappé:** The Real Madrid forward, who remains a perennial favorite
in global football awards due to his consistent scoring record and impact on
   the pitch.

The selection process for the Ballon d’Or involves a panel of international journalists
who vote based on individual performance, team success, and overall talent. While
Matthäus’s opinion carries significant weight in the football community, the final
decision rests with the voting body.

## What Happens Next?

The Ballon d’Or continues to be one of the most debated topics in sports media.
The endorsement from a figure like Matthäus highlights the impressive domestic campaign
Bayern Munich enjoyed, yet it does not account for the diverse criteria used by
voters, which often include international tournament success and performance in
major continental competitions like the UEFA Champions League.

As of now, there is no official information regarding the specific voting breakdown
or the final tally that will determine the winner. Football fans and analysts alike
must wait for the official ceremony to see if the consensus among voters aligns
with the German legend’s assessment or if the competition from La Liga stars will
prove too strong to overcome.

### Conclusion

Lothar Matthäus has made his stance clear, prioritizing the contributions of Harry
Kane and Michael Olise at the club level. However, with a shortlist of 30 elite
players, the race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or remains wide open. The outcome will ultimately
depend on the collective judgment of the international panel tasked with crowning
the best player in the world.
