The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Imo State has undergone a significant leadership
transition. According to a report by the Daily Post Nigeria, Robinson Nwachukwu
Duru has been appointed as the party’s acting state chairman. This decision follows
a resolution reached by the party’s chairmen forum, which represents all 27 local
government areas in the state.

## Context of the Leadership Change

The appointment was formalized during a meeting held in Owerri. Anthony Opara, the
secretary of the chairmen forum, issued a press statement clarifying that the move
was a direct response to the perceived mismanagement of party affairs by the former
State Executive Committee. The forum cited a lack of effective leadership from the
State Working Committee (SWC) as the primary driver for their decision.

The forum officially passed a vote of no confidence in all members of the previous
committee, alleging gross incompetence. To prevent a leadership vacuum, the forum
unanimously selected Duru—who previously served as the party chairman for Nkwerre
LGA—to take the helm. Concurrently, Opara was appointed to serve as the acting secretary.

## Addressing Internal Conduct

Beyond the change in personnel, the chairmen forum used the announcement to address
broader concerns regarding party discipline. The statement explicitly condemned
what it characterized as “anti-party activities.” Specifically, the forum highlighted
instances where individuals allegedly wore the insignia of rival political parties
while attending SDP meetings.

The new leadership has issued a stern warning that such conduct will no longer be
tolerated within the organization. This move appears aimed at consolidating party
identity and ensuring that members remain aligned with the SDP’s objectives as they
look toward future electoral cycles.

## Future Outlook for the SDP in Imo

The newly appointed leadership has been tasked with a specific mandate: to oversee
the daily operations of the party and to reposition it for future political participation.
The forum emphasized that the party is currently focused on the selection process
for its next governorship candidate.

The statement concluded with an appeal to the party faithful to remain committed
to the SDP’s mission. While the transition marks a period of internal restructuring,
the forum expressed a clear goal of ensuring that a credible candidate is presented
to the electorate in the upcoming governorship election. As of the time of the report,
the specific details regarding the timeline for a permanent leadership election
or the full scope of the “repositioning” strategy remain unavailable.
