The political landscape in Lagos State is beginning to shift as the 2027 gubernatorial
race gains momentum. Mudashir Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly,
has publicly endorsed the current Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, as a suitable
successor to the incumbent Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

## A Strategic Endorsement

Speaker Obasa made these remarks during a formal manifesto presentation held at
the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts in Iganmu, Lagos. According
to reports from the _Daily Post_, the event served as a platform for Hamzat to outline
his vision for the state, with Obasa lending his political weight to the Deputy
Governor’s ambitions.

Obasa emphasized that Hamzat possesses the necessary qualifications to lead the
state, citing his professional history and academic credentials. “He has the competence,
character, and most importantly, the determination to rewrite the Lagos State socio-
economic narrative,” Obasa stated during the event.

## Hamzat’s Path to the Ticket

Dr. Obafemi Hamzat is no stranger to the gubernatorial aspirations of the All Progressives
Congress (APC) in Lagos. Historical context provided by the _Daily Post_ indicates
that Hamzat previously sought the governorship in 2019. However, he was persuaded
to step aside and serve as the running mate to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, a role he has
occupied throughout the current administration.

The endorsement from the Speaker of the House of Assembly is considered a significant
development within the party’s internal dynamics. By highlighting Hamzat’s experience
in both the private and public sectors, Obasa aimed to reassure stakeholders of
the Deputy Governor’s capacity to deliver on his campaign promises should he secure
the party’s nomination and win the general election.

## Looking Toward 2027

While the endorsement provides a glimpse into the potential direction of the APC
in Lagos, the political process remains in its early stages. The _Daily Post_ report
notes that the manifesto presentation was a key moment for Hamzat to distinguish
his platform. As of the time of reporting, specific details regarding the full scope
of his policy proposals beyond the general endorsement by the Speaker were not provided.

The transition of power in Lagos is often a closely watched event, given the state’s
status as Nigeria’s economic hub. The support of legislative leadership, such as
that offered by Obasa, typically plays a critical role in the consolidation of political
support within the ruling party.

### Conclusion

The endorsement of Dr. Obafemi Hamzat by Speaker Mudashir Obasa marks a notable
step in the early maneuvering for the 2027 Lagos gubernatorial election. With his
background in public service and the backing of key legislative figures, Hamzat
is positioning himself as a primary contender for the APC ticket. Whether this support
will translate into a successful bid remains to be seen as the electoral calendar
progresses.
