Ken Griffin Warns Trump Tariffs on Allies Are Fueling Inflation and Midterm Risks
Citadel founder Ken Griffin sharply criticized trade tensions with traditional allies, warning that economic friction and rising prices could cost Republicans control of Congress.
Ken Griffin, the billionaire founder and chief executive of hedge fund Citadel, has sharply criticized the Trump administration’s trade policy toward traditional international partners, describing disputes with U.S. allies as “a disaster” that has driven up consumer prices, according to a report by Business Insider.
Speaking to Bloomberg’s Dani Burger at the Future of Global Markets Conference in New York, Griffin argued that imposing trade penalties on long-standing partners has fractured global logistics and reinforced price pressures at home. His comments highlight growing unease among prominent conservative donors regarding the trajectory of federal economic and foreign policy.
Tariffs, Inflation, and Supply Disruption
Griffin argued that ongoing trade confrontations with Canada and the European Union have exacerbated domestic inflation rather than resolving underlying trade imbalances. According to Griffin, escalating tensions have severed international supply chains, fulfilling warnings he expressed earlier regarding aggressive tariff strategies.
The criticism comes amid lingering trade friction. Earlier this year, the administration announced additional 50% tariffs on targeted Canadian imports, citing concerns over alleged discrimination against American automotive, alcohol, and dairy products. At the same time, broader economic indicators reflect mounting strain on households: U.S. consumer prices climbed 3.7% year-over-year in September, effectively eroding nearly all hourly wage gains achieved by average workers, while rising fuel costs and restricted housing availability remain acute pressures.
Projected Fallout in the Midterm Elections
Griffin, who noted that he continues to financially back several Republican candidates, predicted that economic dissatisfaction will weigh heavily on the party at the ballot box. Historically, midterms function as a referendum on the administration in power, and Griffin projected that Republicans are positioned to lose control of at least one chamber of Congress. Specifically, he observed that the House of Representatives faces an uphill battle, while margins in the Senate are expected to remain extraordinarily tight.
Critique Extends to Foreign and Immigration Policy
Beyond fiscal matters, the Citadel executive addressed other contentious policy areas. Griffin voiced concern regarding public communication surrounding military engagements, specifically stating that the administration has struggled to articulate a clear rationale for the deeply unpopular conflict in Iran.
Addressing domestic policy, Griffin described aspects of current immigration enforcement as “disgraceful.” While reiterating support for border security, he argued that gainfully employed immigrants already established in the country should have access to a legal framework enabling them to remain and contribute economically.
Griffin’s public assessment highlights a notable divide between market-focused conservative financiers and populist trade approaches as voters prepare for pivotal congressional races.
