Iliana Yotova Makes History as Bulgaria’s First Elected Female President
In a landmark political shift, Iliana Yotova has secured a decisive victory in Bulgaria’s presidential runoff, cementing her place as the first woman ever elected to the nation's highest office.

A Historic Electoral Milestone
Bulgaria has reached a significant political milestone as Iliana Yotova has been elected as the country’s first female president. The 62-year-old leader secured a commanding victory in the recent presidential runoff, capturing 57.58 per cent of the vote. This result, confirmed by near-final data from the Central Election Commission on Monday, November 2, follows the processing of 99.95 per cent of polling station protocols.
Yotova, running alongside her vice-presidential candidate Kiril Valchev, outperformed the opposition ticket of former caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov and Georgi Kandev. The opposition pairing garnered 39.47 per cent of the total votes, falling significantly behind Yotova’s support base.
From Acting President to Elected Leader
While this election marks her first mandate as the elected head of state, Yotova is no stranger to the responsibilities of the presidency. She has been serving as the acting president of Bulgaria since January 2026. She ascended to the role following the resignation of former President Rumen Radev, who vacated the position to transition into a career within the parliamentary sphere.
Yotova’s path to the presidency is built on a long-standing career in public service and governance. Her tenure as acting president followed two consecutive terms as vice-president, a position she held alongside Radev after their successful election campaigns in 2016 and 2021.
A Career Defined by Public Service
Before her elevation to the vice-presidency, Yotova established a robust political profile within both domestic and international arenas. She served as a member of the European Parliament for a decade, holding the seat from 2007 until 2017. Her professional background also includes a significant tenure in the media sector, where she worked as a journalist for Bulgarian National Television before pivoting to full-time politics.
This election result is being viewed as a transformative moment for Bulgaria. Despite the country’s active participation in democratic processes, it had never previously elected a woman to the presidency. With this victory, Yotova not only solidifies her current leadership but also sets a new precedent in the nation’s political history.
