## A Return to Panem

The dystopian world of Panem is set to return to the big screen on November 20,
2026, with the premiere of _The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping_. Based on
Suzanne Collins’ 2025 novel, the film serves as the second prequel to the original
trilogy, following the 2020 adaptation of _The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes_.
The narrative shifts focus to the 50th Hunger Games, occurring 24 years before the
events of the original series, and centers on the experience of a young Haymitch
Abernathy as he is reaped as a District 12 tribute.

## Production and Direction

The film is directed by Francis Lawrence, who has helmed every entry in the series
since the 2013 installment. The screenplay was penned by Billy Ray, with production
handled by Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson under their Color Force banner. Development
moved quickly; Jacobson noted in March 2025 that the team had a solid draft and
had scouted filming locations even before the source novel was officially released.
Principal photography commenced in the summer of 2025.

## An Expanded Cast of Tributes and Capitol Figures

Because the 50th Hunger Games—the second Quarter Quell—featured twice the usual
number of tributes, the film boasts a large ensemble cast. Joseph Zada takes on
the lead role of young Haymitch Abernathy. Producer Nina Jacobson stated that the
team sought an actor capable of capturing Haymitch’s inherent “mischief” prior to
the trauma that defines his later years, rather than simply mimicking Woody Harrelson’s
performance.

The cast includes several high-profile additions: Ralph Fiennes portrays President
Coriolanus Snow, while Elle Fanning steps into the role of a younger Effie Trinket.
Other notable cast members include Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Kieran
Culkin as Caesar Flickerman, Maya Hawke as Wiress, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee
Latier. The cast also features Whitney Peak, Lili Taylor, Mckenna Grace, and Billy
Porter, among others.

## Trailers and Promotional Teasers

Lionsgate has released several promotional materials leading up to the premiere.
A teaser trailer in November 2025 offered a first look at the 50th Games’ arena,
while a full-length trailer released in April 2026 provided context regarding Haymitch’s
reaping and his early interactions with President Snow. A second full-length trailer,
released in September 2026, highlighted Haymitch’s defiance against the Capitol,
including a scene where he challenges the status quo during a public appearance.

## The Return of Familiar Faces

Excitement surrounding the film peaked recently with the confirmation that original
trilogy stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Woody Harrelson will appear
in the project. While the specific nature of their roles remained speculative for
months, Lawrence confirmed her involvement on October 28, 2026. Speaking on the
_Call Her Daddy_ podcast, Lawrence described the experience of reuniting with the
original crew and cast members as “unemotional” and “crazy.”

Given that the source novel includes an epilogue set after the events of _Mockingjay_—
featuring Haymitch recounting his past to Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark—it
is widely expected that the returning stars will appear in this capacity. The film’s
commitment to remaining loyal to Collins’ source material suggests that the epilogue
will be a key component of the cinematic experience.
