House of Representatives Directs FERMA to Finalize Kirikiri Road Rehabilitation

Olamide

Lawmakers have issued a fresh call for the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency to address abandoned sections of the Kirikiri Federal Road in Lagos, citing ongoing logistical and economic challenges for local residents.

The House of Representatives has formally requested that the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) prioritize and complete the rehabilitation of the Kirikiri Federal Road located in the Ajeromi-Ifelodun Federal Constituency of Lagos State. This legislative move comes in response to reports of persistent transportation difficulties faced by commuters, business owners, and residents due to the road’s current state of disrepair.

A History of Legislative Intervention

The recent resolution follows a previous effort by the House to address the infrastructure deficit in the area. On October 3, 2023, the House adopted Resolution HR. 192/10/2023, which called for immediate intervention on the Kirikiri Federal Road. According to the Daily Post Nigeria, while FERMA subsequently performed rehabilitation work on the Amuwo section of the road, the portions situated within Ajeromi-Ifelodun remained largely untouched.

Hon. Kalejaiye Adeboye Paul, who sponsored the latest motion, highlighted that the failure to complete the project has left the original objectives of the 2023 resolution unfulfilled. Lawmakers expressed concern that the incomplete state of the road continues to hinder the movement of goods and daily transit for the local population.

Specific Demands for FERMA

The House has issued several specific directives to the agency to ensure the project is brought to a successful conclusion:

  • Targeted Assessment: FERMA is required to conduct a thorough assessment of the road, with a specific focus on the Berger-Suya axis.
  • Quality Control: The agency must evaluate the standard of work performed on previously rehabilitated sections. If any repairs are found to be defective or substandard, the agency is expected to undertake necessary corrections to meet approved engineering standards.
  • Project Completion: FERMA has been directed to return to the designated road corridors within Ajeromi-Ifelodun to accelerate work on all outstanding sections.

Monitoring and Oversight

To ensure that these directives are followed, the House of Representatives has mandated its Committees on Works and Federal Roads Maintenance Agency to oversee the implementation of the resolution. This oversight mechanism is intended to ensure that the agency fulfills the goals established in the 2023 resolution and provides a sustainable solution to the road’s deteriorating condition.

As of the time of reporting, specific timelines for the commencement of these additional works or the exact budget allocations for the completion of the project have not been publicly disclosed. The House remains focused on ensuring that the infrastructure needs of the Ajeromi-Ifelodun constituency are met in accordance with established engineering and safety requirements.

Conclusion

The call for the completion of the Kirikiri Federal Road highlights the ongoing challenges of infrastructure maintenance in high-traffic urban areas. By mandating further assessments and oversight, the House of Representatives aims to address the gaps left by previous rehabilitation efforts and mitigate the economic and logistical impact on the local community.
