Governor Mutfwang Defends Tinubu’s Economic Reforms Amid Campaign Kickoff

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has publicly defended the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu, arguing that the current administration inherited a country facing severe fiscal and structural instability. Speaking during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign council for the 2027 general elections in Jos, the Governor characterized the President’s intervention as a necessary measure to prevent a national collapse.

Contextualizing the Economic Transition

Governor Mutfwang emphasized that the economic hardships currently experienced by Nigerians should be viewed through the lens of the conditions present when President Tinubu assumed office in May 2023. According to the Governor, the previous administration left the country in a state where it struggled to service external debts and faced significant challenges in international financial relations.

The Governor highlighted specific indicators of this instability, noting that international airlines had previously reduced or halted operations in Nigeria due to difficulties in repatriating funds. Furthermore, he claimed that the nation’s external reserves had depleted to approximately $3 billion. Mutfwang stated that under the current administration, those reserves have risen to over $50 billion, which he cited as evidence of progress resulting from the ongoing reforms.

Addressing Local Economic and Security Concerns

Beyond federal policy, Governor Mutfwang detailed efforts by his administration to mitigate the impact of economic adjustments on Plateau State residents. These measures include:

  • The introduction of the Tin City Metro bus service.
  • The revival of local rail services within the Jos metropolis.
  • A 50 percent reduction in tuition fees for state-owned tertiary institutions.
  • A 300 percent increase in student allowances.

Regarding security, the Governor acknowledged that challenges persist within the state. He outlined plans to facilitate the return of internally displaced persons to their ancestral homes, supported by the deployment of retrained Operation Rainbow personnel and approximately 800 newly trained forest guards intended for vulnerable areas.

Campaign Strategy and Future Outlook

The inauguration event marked the official start of mobilization efforts for the re-election of President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and Governor Mutfwang’s own re-election bid. Sir Joseph Ari, Director-General of the Mutfwang/Piyo 2027 Campaign Council, stated that the campaign intends to focus on issue-based discourse and teamwork, noting that the council has already received support from 115 various groups.

Mutfwang urged party members to prioritize grassroots engagement, reminding them that electoral success is determined at the polling unit level. He concluded by framing governance as a continuous relay, emphasizing that his administration seeks a second term to consolidate ongoing projects and programs.

While the Governor expressed optimism regarding the trajectory of the country, he maintained that the recovery process requires sustained commitment from the public. The APC leadership in Plateau State has also announced that national party figures are scheduled to visit the state on November 14, 2026, to further coordinate campaign activities.
