Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets crashed out of the WAFU B U-17 Championship after a 1-1 draw against Côte d'Ivoire left the five-time world champions bottom of Group B.

Nigeria’s under-17 men’s national football team, the Golden Eaglets, have been eliminated from the WAFU B U-17 Championship after playing to a 1-1 draw against Côte d’Ivoire in their final Group B fixture, according to a report by Daily Post Nigeria.

The result brought an abrupt conclusion to the qualifying hopes of the five-time world champions, leaving the Nigerian youth side at the bottom of their group with just one point from two matches.

Group B Standings Seal Nigeria’s Fate

Heading into the crucial encounter, Nigeria required a positive result after opening their tournament with a 2-1 defeat against Niger. The subsequent draw against Côte d’Ivoire was insufficient to rescue their qualifying campaign.

Daily Post Nigeria reported that Niger finished atop Group B with four points, while Côte d’Ivoire took second place with two points. Nigeria’s return of a single point from two fixtures consigned the team to third place, preventing them from progressing further in the regional competition.

Defensive Setback and Second-Half Revival

Although the Golden Eaglets delivered an improved display compared to their opening group fixture, an early defensive lapse proved decisive. Miscommunication at the back allowed Côte d’Ivoire to find the net midway through the first half, forcing Nigeria into a difficult chasing position.

The Nigerian side responded with elevated urgency following the halftime interval. The team sustained pressure across the pitch, creating multiple attacking opportunities as they pushed for an equalizer against a resolute Ivorian defense.

Persistence was rewarded five minutes before the end of normal time. In the 85th minute, Colombus Igboenyobe produced a notable solo run before setting up substitute John Abiodun, who slotted home the equalizing goal to bring the scoreline to 1-1.

Late Chances Go Begging in Stoppage Window

With momentum firmly on their side, Nigeria came agonizingly close to securing a dramatic comeback victory in the final minutes of regulation time.

In the 89th minute, Abiodun broke clean through on goal with only the Ivorian goalkeeper standing between him and a match-winning double. However, the substitute sent his shot high over the crossbar. Just sixty seconds later, Nigeria launched another dangerous attack, but Côte d’Ivoire’s goalkeeper denied a goal-bound strike with an acrobatic save, deflecting the ball out for a corner.

Conclusion

Despite a spirited second-half rally and late opportunities to take the lead, the Golden Eaglets were unable to find the decisive second goal. The 1-1 stalemate ended Nigeria’s run in the qualifying tournament, marking an early exit for one of international youth football’s most historically successful sides.
