Gaming Fever: Why Your Colleagues Are Suddenly Taking Time Off This November
A surge in highly anticipated video game releases is causing a noticeable spike in workplace absenteeism this month, with employees using PTO or 'sick days' to dive into new titles.
A Triple Threat of Gaming Releases
Workplaces across the globe are experiencing an unusual staffing trend this November as a trio of blockbuster video game releases hits the market. The month began with the debut of World of Warcraft: Forever, an ambitious, subscription-based reimagining of the original fantasy world. This was followed closely by the release of a ground-up remake of the 1998 classic The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, now available on the Nintendo Switch 2.
However, the primary driver of the current workplace disruption is the imminent arrival of Grand Theft Auto 6. Set for release on November 19, the title represents the first complete refresh of the franchise since 2013. With a reported budget estimated between $1 billion and $1.5 billion, the game is widely considered one of the most anticipated releases in the history of the industry.
Quantifying the ‘Gaming PTO’ Spike
The impact on corporate productivity is becoming statistically significant. Data from workforce management firm UKG indicates that time-off requests for the week of the GTA 6 launch are approximately 20% higher than during the same period in previous years. Similarly, accounting firm PwC estimates that overall PTO requests for the month are running 9% to 17% above normal levels.
A survey conducted by Zety of 1,040 American workers highlights the demographic split behind these numbers. The study found that 11% of respondents intend to take time off specifically for the GTA 6 release. When broken down by gender, 19% of men surveyed planned to take launch day off, compared to 7% of women. Notably, the survey also revealed that 15% of employees are opting to bypass formal leave requests entirely, planning instead to call in sick to play the games.
Cultural Impact and Employer Responses
The phenomenon has not gone unnoticed by the gaming industry itself. The official World of Warcraft account on X recently polled followers on whether they had taken time off for the game’s launch, with nearly 60% of respondents confirming they had. Meanwhile, online forums and social media are filled with discussions on how to best schedule leave to maximize gaming time.
The cultural weight of these releases has even drawn commentary from professional sports. Houston Rockets center Steven Adams recently joked that the performance of athletes, coaches, and scouts across various leagues would likely decline throughout November due to the GTA 6 launch, predicting a return to form only once December arrives.
While some employers are bracing for a wave of unexpected absences, others are embracing the moment. Rana Rahman, CEO of the UK-based agency Raptor PR, opted to grant his nine-person team an extra day of annual leave for the GTA 6 release, even providing each employee with a copy of the game. For many, the decision to take time off is viewed as a necessary break. As career expert Jasmine Escalera noted, PTO is intended for relaxation and replenishment, and for many, that now includes immersing themselves in the latest digital entertainment.
