FRSC Targets Unregistered Vehicles and Overloading in New Benue Enforcement Drive

Olamide

The Federal Road Safety Corps has initiated 'Operation Guduma' in Benue State, a targeted enforcement campaign aimed at curbing the use of fake number plates and dangerous vehicle overloading to improve road safety and national security.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has officially commenced a new enforcement initiative in Benue State, aimed at addressing widespread violations of vehicle registration and traffic regulations. Known as Operation Guduma—a Hausa term for ‘hammer’—the campaign is designed to act as a decisive measure against motorists who operate vehicles with fake, concealed, or expired identification, as well as those who engage in hazardous overloading practices.

Understanding Operation Guduma

According to the FRSC, this initiative is the second phase of a broader, nationwide special intervention patrol. The current operation, which began on November 2, 2026, is scheduled to run for five days, concluding on November 6, 2026. While the initial five-day window serves as an intensive push, the agency has indicated that enforcement efforts will continue under the supervision of state commands even after the national intervention period ends.

The flag-off ceremony, held at the Agan Toll Gate in Makurdi, featured Corps Commander Christopher Haruna Kuje, representing Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed. Kuje emphasized that the primary motivation behind the crackdown is the intersection of road safety and national security. By identifying and removing vehicles with improper registration, the FRSC aims to assist security agencies in tracking vehicles that might otherwise be used in criminal activities.

Key Focus Areas for Enforcement

The FRSC has outlined several specific infractions that officers will be monitoring throughout the operation:

  • Vehicle Identification: The use of fake, defaced, concealed, or expired number plates.
  • Unregistered Vehicles: Operating vehicles that have not been properly documented with the relevant authorities.
  • Overloading: The unsafe practice of overloading vehicles with passengers, animals, or excessive goods, which poses a significant risk to road users.

To ensure the effectiveness of the operation, the FRSC has deployed personnel from its national headquarters to work alongside state commands and other security agencies. This collaborative approach is intended to provide a comprehensive net for identifying non-compliant motorists.

Historical Context and Future Implications

This latest operation follows a previous phase conducted earlier this year. Between May 18 and May 22, 2026, the first iteration of Operation Guduma resulted in the arrest of over 1,600 motorists across 11 states. During that period, the FRSC reported that offenders were processed through legal channels. Notably, individuals found using counterfeit diplomatic number plates were handed over to the Department of State Services for deeper investigation, highlighting the serious nature of identity-related traffic offenses.

The FRSC has issued a strong advisory to all drivers and vehicle owners to ensure their documentation is current and their vehicles are compliant with safety standards. While the current operation is highly visible, the agency maintains that compliance is a continuous requirement, not merely a response to temporary enforcement drives.

Conclusion

As Operation Guduma progresses through Benue State, the FRSC remains focused on its mandate to sanitize the roads and bolster security through better vehicle identification. Motorists are encouraged to verify their registration status immediately to avoid legal consequences as the corps continues its efforts to curb traffic violations across the region.
