FRSC Launches Operation GUDUMA to Curb Illegal Number Plates in Abia

Olamide

The Federal Road Safety Corps has initiated a targeted enforcement campaign in Abia State to remove fake, defaced, and unauthorized vehicle registration plates following security warnings from the Office of the National Security Adviser.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Abia State Sector Command has officially launched the second phase of Operation GUDUMA, a nationwide initiative aimed at sanitizing vehicle registration across the state. This enforcement drive specifically targets motorists utilizing fake, covered, defaced, or obsolete number plates, as well as those operating with unauthorized diplomatic tags.

Security Concerns Prompt Enforcement

According to a statement released by the Abia State Sector Commander, CC Ngozi Ezeoma, the operation is a direct response to urgent concerns raised by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). Authorities have identified a growing trend where criminal elements exploit irregular vehicle identification to evade law enforcement and facilitate illicit activities. By cracking down on these non-compliant vehicles, the FRSC aims to bolster security measures and improve traffic safety on Nigerian highways.

Operational Scope and Strategy

The operation, which is scheduled to run throughout the current work week, is part of a broader, intensified effort directed by the Corps Marshal to standardize vehicle identification across the country. The initiative focuses on two primary objectives:

  • Identification and Apprehension: Officers are actively patrolling designated corridors to spot and stop vehicles displaying illegal or tampered registration plates.
  • Traffic Management: Beyond enforcement, the operation is designed to ensure the continued free flow of traffic, minimizing disruptions during the inspection process.

CC Ezeoma confirmed that the command is fully prepared to execute these directives, with the exercise being led in Abia State by ACM Oki Adetunji, who is acting as a representative of the Corps Marshal.

Handling Diplomatic Protocols

A notable aspect of the current operation is the specific handling of vehicles bearing diplomatic number plates. The FRSC has emphasized that while these vehicles are subject to scrutiny, officers are instructed to approach them with professional courtesy. All inspections involving diplomatic vehicles will be conducted in strict adherence to established international and national diplomatic protocols, ensuring that the enforcement remains within the bounds of legal and diplomatic standards.

Conclusion

As the FRSC continues its operations throughout the week, motorists in Abia State are encouraged to ensure their vehicle documentation is legitimate and clearly displayed. While the FRSC has outlined the operational goals and the impetus provided by the ONSA, specific data regarding the number of vehicles already impounded or the total number of citations issued during this phase has not yet been released. The agency maintains that these measures are essential for maintaining public order and supporting national security objectives.
