From Retirement to Entrepreneurship: One Expat’s Journey in Koh Samui

Olamide

After relocating to Thailand for a peaceful retirement, Michael Kane discovered that a life of leisure wasn't enough to keep him satisfied, leading him to launch a successful café business.

The Quest for a Different Life

For many, the dream of retirement involves endless days on the beach, frequent massages, and the total absence of professional responsibility. Michael Kane, a 54-year-old former software and restaurant professional, initially sought this exact lifestyle when he moved from the United States to the Thai island of Koh Samui in 2020. Having spent decades working in diverse fields ranging from construction to real estate and marketing, Kane was eager to leave his life in the U.S. behind.

His connection to Thailand began a decade ago during a short visit that eventually turned into a three-month stay. Captivated by the culture, he began splitting his time between Atlanta and Thailand before making the permanent move. Upon settling in Mae Nam, he secured a two-bedroom apartment for $186,100 and navigated the complexities of Thai residency, transitioning from a Thailand Elite visa to a 10-year Long-Term Resident Wealthy Pensioners visa.

The Reality of Retirement Boredom

The initial phase of Kane’s retirement lived up to his expectations. He spent roughly 18 months enjoying the freedom of island life. However, he soon encountered a common, yet rarely discussed, challenge of early retirement: a lack of purpose. Without hobbies like golf, fishing, or creative arts to fill his time, the novelty of beach days and relaxation began to fade.

“There are only so many days you can spend at the beach and so many massages you can get,” Kane noted. The realization that he was not content with a life of total inactivity became the catalyst for a new professional chapter.

Building Izzy’s Coffee

The transition from retiree to business owner began organically. His then-partner, a personal trainer, had been baking banana cakes to sell around the island. Kane, noticing a lack of high-quality coffee options in the area, saw an opportunity to complement the cakes with a specialized beverage offering. This led to the creation of Izzy’s Coffee, named after his dog.

The venture started as a modest outdoor kiosk, requiring an initial investment of 100,000 Thai baht for construction and an additional 400,000 Thai baht for equipment and furnishings. Utilizing his Long-Term Resident visa, which permits work, Kane and his current partner, Yam, began operating the business. Six months ago, the couple decided to upgrade the kiosk into an enclosed café to better manage the challenges of the tropical climate, including heat and noise.

A New Sense of Purpose

Today, Kane finds fulfillment in the daily operations of the café, focusing on customer experience and drink development. While he acknowledges that Thailand is not a “panacea” and can present significant legal and financial challenges, he considers it home. His social connections remain strong; he has maintained a close relationship with his ex-wife, who has visited him in Thailand alongside her new husband, and he remains connected to his extended family.

Despite finding success with the café, Kane admits that his restless nature is resurfacing. With the business now running smoothly, he finds himself looking toward the horizon for his next project. While he has no interest in franchising or scaling to multiple locations, he remains certain that his retirement will not be defined by idleness. For Kane, the journey from the U.S. to Thailand has been less about finding a place to stop, and more about finding the freedom to build something new.
