## A Rapid Ascent in Endurance Racing

For 37-year-old Lau Wen Loong, the world of competitive fitness was entirely foreign
until a friend introduced him to Hyrox, an endurance sport that blends running with
various fitness stations. Despite having not exercised regularly for two years,
Lau signed up for his first race in Singapore in August 2024 after just six weeks
of preparation. He completed that debut event in under 73 minutes, a feat that ignited
a passion for the sport and a desire to maintain his newfound momentum.

In the two years since that initial challenge, Lau has transformed his lifestyle,
competing in 21 races across 11 cities, including stops in Bangkok, Mumbai, and
Chengdu. Currently based in Seoul, where he balances training with his work on an
AI startup, Lau notes that he feels physically stronger than he did in his youth.
While he manages the costs of travel and registration—often offset by brand ambassadorships—
he remains committed to the circuit, with seven additional races scheduled for this
year.

## Top Three Host Cities

Lau highlights three specific locations that have stood out during his travels,
noting that the unique setup of each venue significantly impacts the racing experience.

**Osaka, Japan (January 2026):** This event marked Lau’s first winter race. The
venue layout, which required runners to move between two separate halls, provided
a refreshing blast of cold air during the transition. Lau achieved a personal best
of 61:51 at this event and enjoyed the opportunity to explore the Dotonbori district
and dine with his father, who occasionally joins him on his travels.

**Incheon, South Korea (May 2026):** Held in a major convention center, the Incheon
race offered a smooth, rhythmic layout that Lau found particularly favorable. Beyond
the competition, where he secured a first-place finish in his age group, the event
provided a cultural highlight; he experienced the local highway rest stops, known
as _hyugaeso_, which he described as multi-story complexes filled with various stalls.

**Jakarta, Indonesia (June 2026):** As the inaugural Hyrox race in Indonesia, the
event was held in a scenic convention center situated within one of the city’s green
spaces. This race was notable for Lau’s participation in two doubles categories,
where he partnered with a competitor he had only met and trained with once on the
day of the event.

## The Mental and Physical Demands of Hyrox

The global Hyrox community has become a significant part of Lau’s life, leading
to numerous friendships with fellow athletes. He describes the sport as a form of
therapy, noting that the intense physical exertion often leads participants to process
deep emotions, with tears of both frustration and joy being common sights at the
finish line.

Reflecting on the unpredictable nature of the sport, Lau acknowledged the widely
discussed incident at the September 2026 Beijing event, where athlete Joanna Wietrzyk
faced a highly public struggle during her race. While he did not witness the event
firsthand, he expressed empathy for the difficulty of the situation and voiced his
hope for her future recovery. For Lau, the journey continues, as he plans to remain
active in the circuit for at least another year, citing the increased self-awareness
the sport provides as its greatest reward.
