From Mobility Struggles to Viral Success: How One Dog’s Pilates Journey Sparked a Global Business
When her 15-year-old golden retriever began losing his mobility, Pilates instructor Jillian Loustaunau turned to her own professional expertise to help him. The results were so transformative that she launched 'Pawlates 101,' an international online training program for senior dogs.
A Sudden Decline in Mobility
For Jillian Loustaunau, a 36-year-old Pilates studio owner based in Kailua, O’ahu, her golden retriever, Weasel, has long been a source of youthful energy. Even as he approached his 16th birthday, the dog maintained a vibrant demeanor that often led strangers to mistake him for a puppy. However, the situation changed abruptly in May when Weasel began struggling to walk in a straight line, appearing unsteady on his feet.
Seeking answers, Loustaunau consulted with a veterinarian who was also a client at her studio. During a neurological assessment, the vet performed a test where she flipped Weasel’s back paw under; the dog failed to correct his foot position, a sign that suggested potential neurological issues. The vet recommended a regimen of acupuncture and physiotherapy to help preserve his remaining mobility.
Integrating Pilates into Rehabilitation
While traditional physiotherapy sessions introduced exercises like planks and backward walking, Loustaunau saw an opportunity to integrate her own professional background. Having previously allowed Weasel to observe her clients and occasionally interact with studio equipment, she decided to incorporate Pilates apparatus into his recovery plan. Weasel began working with a variety of tools, including the reformer, Cadillac, chair, CoreAlign, and ladder barrel.
The results were immediate and significant. Loustaunau noted that Weasel’s alignment and stance improved dramatically, and his previous spark returned, leading friends and clients to remark that he seemed to have regained his youthful vitality. Encouraged by this progress, she began sharing videos of his rehabilitation on Instagram to document his journey for his physical therapist.
The Birth of ‘Pawlates 101’
The social media footage quickly gained traction, eventually reaching over 29,000 followers. Many pet owners, particularly those with aging dogs, reached out to Loustaunau seeking guidance on how to replicate these exercises at home. Recognizing a demand for accessible pet rehabilitation, she launched “Pawlates 101” in August.
The program, which operates via monthly Zoom sessions, has attracted a global audience with participants joining from countries including Greece, England, and India. During these hour-long classes, Loustaunau demonstrates techniques that do not require expensive studio equipment, showing owners how to use household items like a bottom step to assist with planking exercises. Each $30 session includes access to pre-recorded content that provides modifications tailored to a dog’s specific stage of recovery.
Future Aspirations for Pet Wellness
Loustaunau views the initiative as a way to challenge the common misconception that senior dogs should cease physical activity. By keeping dogs moving, she believes owners can significantly improve their pets’ quality of life. Looking ahead, she aims to formalize the business by developing a dedicated app. This platform would allow owners to customize exercise routines based on their dog’s daily goals, while also tracking essential health metrics such as hydration, nutrition, and bathroom habits.
As for Weasel, who is set to turn 16 shortly, Loustaunau describes him as an enthusiastic partner in this new venture. While the business is still in its early stages, the success of the program has provided a new path for Loustaunau to support other pet owners navigating the challenges of senior dog care.
