From Corporate to Cottage Industry: How One Mother Replaced Her Salary with Six Side Hustles

Olamide

After 17 years in a traditional career, one mother left the workforce to escape high childcare costs, successfully pivoting to a portfolio of small businesses that offer greater flexibility.

The Decision to Pivot

For many working parents, the rising cost of professional childcare presents a significant financial hurdle. For one mother, the tipping point arrived after the birth of her second child. Realizing that half of her wages were being consumed by childcare expenses, she made the difficult decision to leave a 17-year career in favor of a more flexible, independent path. Her goal was not to get rich through quick-fix apps or surveys, but to replace her previous income while reclaiming time with her children.

Today, she manages a portfolio of six distinct side hustles. While the income is not as predictable as a traditional salary—fluctuating between $1,400 and $2,000 monthly—she notes that she has reduced her working hours by half compared to her previous role. This shift has allowed her to prioritize family life while maintaining a steady, albeit varied, stream of revenue.

Evaluating the Portfolio

Managing multiple income streams requires a careful assessment of time versus profit. Some of her ventures are highly convenient, while others require significant effort for modest returns.

Her most passive income stream involves Turo, a car-sharing platform. By renting out her Toyota Tacoma, she generates an average of $400 per month. While coordinating pickups and drop-offs can be an inconvenience, she considers it her easiest revenue source, especially since she no longer requires a daily commute.

The venture with the highest earning potential is a mirror photo booth company, True Reflections Photo Booth Co., which she launched with her husband. By investing less than $5,000 in secondhand equipment, they have positioned themselves to keep the full profit of their events, which typically charge $600. While the business requires managing insurance, marketing, and equipment storage, it represents a lucrative opportunity that the couple plans to scale.

The Challenges of Freelancing and Retail

Not all hustles have proven equally sustainable. Freelance writing, despite being a long-standing passion supported by her English degree, remains the most difficult to manage. The industry is highly competitive, and the author notes that landing paid assignments can feel nearly impossible, with rejection being a common experience even for seasoned writers. Despite the volatility, she continues to pitch articles, as the pay for successful assignments—ranging from $125 to $250—remains attractive.

Other ventures have been placed on the back burner. A print-on-demand Shopify store, which utilizes her husband’s design skills, has yet to turn a profit. The author explains that the time required for SEO, advertising, and social media promotion makes it difficult to justify the effort at this stage. Similarly, while she enjoys her housekeeping and meal-prep jobs, she acknowledges that the financial viability of this work is entirely dependent on having access to free childcare from family members.

A New Definition of Success

One of the more creative additions to her portfolio is a small-scale business selling homemade coffee syrups. Born from a desire to save money on expensive drive-thru coffee, the venture has become a viable microbusiness under Arizona’s Cottage Food program. With a 70% profit margin, the business is simple to operate and integrates easily into her home life.

Reflecting on her transition, the author emphasizes that while the reality of side hustles is far more demanding than some internet claims suggest, the trade-off has been worth it. By wearing many hats and constantly balancing a shifting calendar, she has successfully replaced a significant portion of her former income. Ultimately, she views time as her most valuable currency, finding that the flexibility of her new lifestyle outweighs the consistency of her previous corporate role.
