Executives across France's retail and corporate sectors are calling on authorities to restore order following weekend unrest that damaged an estimated 1,500 storefronts.

French business leaders across the retail, fashion, and technology sectors are calling on authorities to restore order after cost-of-living demonstrations escalated into widespread unrest and looting over the weekend, according to a report by Business Insider.

Scale of Damage Across French Retail

The unrest led to widespread damage at commercial properties in Paris and other cities. Alexandre Bompard, chief executive of the major supermarket chain Carrefour, estimated on social media that roughly 1,500 commercial locations across the country had been targeted, including 50 Carrefour stores where shelves were emptied and merchandise destroyed. Bompard urged an uncompromising response, stating that the French Republic must protect its shopkeepers.

Disruptions affected both major chains and independent outlets across various industries:

  • Retail and Department Stores: Nicolas Houzé, executive chairman of Galeries Lafayette, stated that almost all of the department store chain’s locations felt the impact of the unrest. Thierry Cotillard of retail group Les Mousquetaires reported that at least two Intermarché franchises were ransacked in Paris and Rennes, while collective Coopérative U also reported attacks on city-center stores.
  • Luxury and Apparel: Lacoste and Aigle CEO Thierry Guibert stated that the destruction of storefronts jeopardized jobs and investments, describing the vandalism as a direct threat to the country’s workforce and industry.
  • Specialty and Tech Spaces: Beauty retailer Sephora shuttered stores early Saturday afternoon and kept most closed through Sunday following break-ins, according to executive Catherine Spindler. In central Paris, esports group Team Vitality reported extensive theft and broken windows at its gaming facility, while fintech firm Qonto reported an arson fire at its offices, though neither incident resulted in staff injuries.

Calls for Stability and Support

Business representatives emphasized the broader economic and reputational fallout from the weekend’s events. Houzé cautioned that the violence risks damaging France’s international standing and tourism appeal, while retail executives expressed concern over staff members confronted by tense and unsafe working conditions.

To assist recovering businesses, Alain Di Crescenzo, president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in France (CCI France), announced that the organization is creating dedicated support units and mapping damage across affected cities. Di Crescenzo warned that attacks on local businesses harm neighborhoods and deter future commercial investment.

Looking Ahead

With hundreds of storefronts assessing losses, business groups and executives continue to press French officials for stronger security guarantees and political dialogue to de-escalate tensions and prevent further disruption to commercial activity.
