Federal High Court Sets January 2027 Judgment Date for Tukur Mamu Terrorism Trial

Olamide

Justice Mohammed Umar has scheduled the final judgment in the terrorism financing case against Tukur Mamu for January 27, 2027, following the conclusion of final arguments from both the prosecution and the defense.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has reached a significant milestone in the ongoing legal proceedings against Tukur Mamu, an individual previously known for his role as a negotiator during the 2022 Abuja-Kaduna train attack. Justice Mohammed Umar has officially set January 27, 2027, as the date for delivering judgment in the case brought forward by the Federal Government.

Case Background and Charges

Tukur Mamu was initially apprehended on September 7, 2022, by Egyptian security personnel at Cairo International Airport. Following his return to Nigeria, he was arraigned on a 10-count charge related to terrorism financing. As the legal process has unfolded, the prosecution has expanded the scope of the case, introducing additional charges that include money laundering and the unlawful possession of firearms without a valid license.

Arguments Over Evidence

During the most recent court session, legal representatives for both sides presented their final written addresses. A primary point of contention centered on the status of a firearm allegedly recovered from Mamu’s residence. Johnson Usman, SAN, representing the defense, argued that the prosecution failed to produce the firearm’s license in court despite repeated requests. Usman contended that the license was valid at the time of Mamu’s arrest and that the prosecution’s failure to present it creates reasonable doubt.

In response, Justice Umar questioned the defense regarding whether the license in question had expired. Usman maintained that the document was active during the arrest and that the prosecution’s inability to produce it remains a critical issue for the defense. Conversely, David Kaswe, counsel for the Federal Government, disputed these claims. Kaswe asserted that both the firearm and the license had already been tendered as evidence and that the court had previously granted an application for the safe-keeping of these items.

Procedural Developments

The court session concluded with both parties adopting their final written addresses. The prosecution’s address was dated September 18 and filed on September 21. Additionally, during the proceedings, the defense acknowledged the Department of State Services (DSS) for complying with a court order that granted Mamu’s family members access to him. With the arguments now concluded, the court has adjourned until early 2027 to deliver its final verdict.

Conclusion

The upcoming judgment in January 2027 will mark the conclusion of a lengthy legal process that began shortly after Mamu’s 2022 arrest. As the court prepares its ruling, the case remains a focal point for discussions regarding terrorism financing and legal due process in Nigeria. Information regarding the specific details of the evidence presented or the potential sentencing remains subject to the court’s final decision.
