Federal Government Allocates N631.3 Billion for Nine Strategic Road Projects

Olamide

The Nigerian Federal Executive Council has greenlit a N631.3 billion investment to rehabilitate and construct nine critical road networks across the country's six geopolitical zones.

The Nigerian government has officially approved a total expenditure of N631.3 billion aimed at the construction and rehabilitation of nine major road projects nationwide. This announcement was made by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, following a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Strategic Infrastructure Development

According to Minister Umahi, the initiative is designed to span all six geopolitical zones of the country. The government stated that these projects are intended to stimulate economic activity, improve transportation efficiency, and create better connectivity between key commercial hubs. The administration described this move as part of a broader commitment to addressing the state of road infrastructure inherited from previous governments.

Project Breakdown and Allocations

The approved funding covers a diverse range of projects, varying in scale and geographic location. The list of approved projects includes:

  • Ekiti State: N209 billion for the reconstruction of the 81.1km Ado–Ilawe–Ilumaba–Ikole Road, which includes bridge construction.
  • Kogi State: N167 billion for the 95km Etuke–Okeni–Ankpa–Otopa Road.
  • Kano State: N89.2 billion for the 47km Bichi Ring Road, featuring a new flyover.
  • Adamawa/Taraba States: N62 billion for the Tungo–Karamti Road, which incorporates five bridges.
  • Sokoto State: N28.218 billion for the rehabilitation of the 17km Sokoto–Illela Road (Route A1).
  • Delta/Enugu/Rivers Axis: N20.257 billion for an 18km road linking Asaba to the Port Harcourt–Enugu Expressway.
  • Niger State: N14.486 billion for the Dikko–Maje link road connecting to the Suleja–Minna Road.
  • Abia State: N11.33 billion for a road project previously initiated by the state government under the NNPC tax-credit scheme.
  • East–West Road: Remedial works on deteriorated sections.

Quality Assurance and Execution

Addressing concerns regarding the scale of the investment, Minister Umahi emphasized that the government has prioritized value for money and adhered to established due process in the contract award phase. He noted that contractors have been instructed to mobilize to their respective sites immediately. The Ministry of Works has committed to strict supervision of these projects to ensure that construction meets quality standards and adheres to the projected timelines.

Conclusion

While the government has provided the financial breakdown and the list of targeted roads, specific completion timelines for each individual project were not disclosed in the initial briefing. As these projects move from the approval stage to the mobilization phase, the administration maintains that this investment is a critical step toward modernizing Nigeria’s transport network and supporting long-term economic growth.
