Fatal Truck Accident in Lagos Highlights Road Safety Concerns

Olamide

A midnight accident in Gbagada, Lagos, has claimed the life of an elderly passenger after a truck overturned following a tyre burst. Authorities are urging motorists to prioritize vehicle maintenance and speed control.

A tragic accident occurred in the early hours of the morning near the TREM axis of Gbagada, Lagos, resulting in the death of an elderly male passenger. According to a report by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), a six-tyre Mercedes-Benz truck, registered as ABJ 37 AC, overturned while traveling inward Oshodi.

The Circumstances of the Crash

LASTMA officials stated that the truck was fully loaded with various goods, including sealed bags and event chairs, when the incident occurred. Security findings suggest that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when a front tyre suddenly burst. This mechanical failure caused the driver to lose control of the heavy-duty vehicle.

During the driver’s attempt to stabilize the truck, the elderly passenger seated in the front cabin was ejected from the vehicle. The passenger reportedly struck his head against a sharp object, resulting in immediate fatality. The exact speed of the vehicle at the time of the incident was not specified, though authorities have characterized it as significant.

Emergency Response and Site Management

The LASTMA Night Rescue Team, which was patrolling the area, arrived shortly after the crash. To ensure the safety of other road users and prevent secondary collisions, the team cordoned off the area and utilized traffic cones and warning signs. The deceased was evacuated by the Lagos State Emergency Medical Services (SEHMU).

The recovery process for the vehicle was delayed due to the volume and nature of the cargo. LASTMA noted that the goods had to be transferred to another truck before the overturned vehicle could be cleared from the carriageway. Personnel from the Pedro Police Division and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service also assisted in securing the scene.

Official Warnings on Road Safety

Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased. He described the incident as an “avoidable loss” and emphasized the critical role of speed management in preventing fatal outcomes.

Bakare-Oki highlighted several key safety reminders for motorists, particularly those operating heavy-duty vehicles:

  • Speed Moderation: Excessive speed significantly reduces a driver’s ability to react to mechanical failures, such as a tyre burst.
  • Vehicle Maintenance: Drivers are urged to conduct regular inspections of braking systems and tyre conditions before embarking on journeys.
  • Safety Awareness: During the “ember months,” increased vigilance and adherence to traffic regulations are essential for navigating urban highways safely.

The LASTMA General Manager concluded by reaffirming the agency’s commitment to continuous traffic surveillance and rapid emergency response, while stressing that roadworthiness and strict compliance with traffic laws remain the most effective tools for reducing road fatalities in Lagos State.
