End of the Road: Tesla to Discontinue Controversial Cybertruck

Olamide

After three and a half years of production and a tumultuous journey through pop culture, politics, and mechanical challenges, Tesla is winding down its angular electric pickup.

A Curtain Call for an Automotive Icon

Tesla’s Cybertruck, arguably the most polarizing vehicle on modern American roads, is officially nearing the end of its production run. Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced via X that the company will phase out the silver-clad, angular electric pickup, with production expected to wind down completely by the middle of next year. The decision marks the conclusion of a three-and-a-half-year journey that saw the vehicle become a massive cultural touchstone, even as it struggled to achieve the sales volume initially envisioned by the manufacturer.

According to data from Cox Automotive, Tesla delivered approximately 76,000 units over the past three years. While the vehicle captured significant public attention, industry experts suggest its unconventional design ultimately limited its broader market appeal. Stephanie Valdez Streaty, a director of industry insights at Cox Automotive, noted that while the truck’s aesthetic generated tremendous interest, it simultaneously narrowed its potential customer base.

From Shattered Glass to Viral Stunts

The Cybertruck’s history is defined by a series of high-profile moments that began with its 2019 unveiling in Hawthorne, California. During the launch, Musk presented a “Blade Runner”-inspired design, promising a starting price of $39,900 and impressive range capabilities. However, the event is perhaps best remembered for a failed demonstration of the vehicle’s ruggedness. When Tesla’s chief designer, Franz von Holzhausen, threw a metal ball at the driver’s side window to showcase its durability, the glass shattered upon impact. A second attempt on the rear window yielded the same result, though Musk maintained that the ball did not penetrate the cabin.

Following the reveal, Tesla utilized aggressive marketing tactics to establish the truck’s reputation. This included a widely circulated tug-of-war video pitting the Cybertruck against a Ford F-150. The stunt, intended to demonstrate brute strength, drew criticism from skeptics who questioned the fairness of the matchup, noting that the Ford’s rear tires appeared to be spinning while the all-wheel-drive Cybertruck maintained traction.

Operational Challenges and Celebrity Spotlights

The path to production was not smooth. Originally slated for a 2021 release, the Cybertruck faced significant delays due to pandemic-related supply chain disruptions. By the time production finally began in mid-2023, the vehicle had already become a fixture of celebrity culture. High-profile figures, including Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian, Kim Kardashian, and Justin Bieber, were among those associated with the truck.

However, the vehicle’s real-world performance often drew as much attention as its celebrity owners. In early 2024, songwriter Pharrell Williams was captured on video struggling to parallel park the large vehicle in Miami, eventually requiring a valet to complete the maneuver. Furthermore, despite marketing claims regarding the truck’s ruggedness, social media users frequently shared footage of the Cybertruck struggling to navigate snowy conditions.

Recalls and Political Polarization

The Cybertruck’s tenure has been marred by significant technical issues. To date, the vehicle has been subject to 11 recalls. These ranged from a loose accelerator pedal pad that posed a risk of rapid, unintended acceleration to problems with windshield wipers, exterior trim, rear-camera functionality, and even concerns regarding body panels detaching while the vehicle was in motion.

Beyond mechanical hurdles, the Cybertruck became deeply intertwined with American politics. As Elon Musk became a prominent figure in the political landscape, the truck evolved into a symbol of his alignment with the political right. By 2025, the Cybertruck was a common sight at protests outside Tesla dealerships. The political association was solidified in March 2025, when President Donald Trump hosted a press conference on the White House South Lawn featuring several Tesla models, including the Cybertruck. Despite these challenges, the vehicle maintained a corporate presence; in 2025, SpaceX reported spending $131 million to acquire a fleet of Cybertrucks for its own operations.
