The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 21-year-old Michael Samuel in connection with the death of his girlfriend. The incident, which has drawn attention to the risks associated with online social interactions, occurred at the suspect’s residence located in the Ahor area of Benin City.

According to the Commissioner of Police for Edo State, Patrick Daaor, the pair had established a relationship after communicating via social media platforms for several months. Following this period of digital interaction, the victim accepted an invitation to visit the suspect at his home, where the fatal encounter took place.

Conflicting Accounts of the Incident

While the police have characterized the incident as a murder, the suspect has offered a different account of the events that led to the woman’s death. During a police interview, Samuel admitted to the physical altercation but denied any intent to cause harm. He asserted that the victim sustained the fatal injury during a struggle over a knife.

Samuel claimed that a conversation between the two escalated into a heated argument. According to his statement, the victim allegedly armed herself with a knife with the intention of attacking him. Samuel stated that he attempted to disarm her, and during the ensuing struggle, she suffered a neck injury. He further maintained that he attempted to provide assistance to the victim after she was wounded, but she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.

The Edo State Police Command is currently processing the case. Commissioner Daaor confirmed that the suspect remains in police custody as investigators gather further evidence to determine the exact sequence of events. Authorities have indicated that once the investigation is concluded, the suspect will be formally charged and brought before a court of law.
