Authorities in Bauchi State have taken a 26-year-old man into custody following allegations that he posed as a soldier to assault a business owner and steal a vehicle.

The Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 26-year-old John Umar Shehu, a native of Bassa Local Government Area in Plateau State, on charges involving criminal impersonation, assault, and theft. According to a statement released by Police Public Relations Officer SP Nafiu Habib on October 30, 2026, the suspect allegedly utilized a false military identity to gain access to a local business owner before committing a series of crimes.

The Sequence of Events

The investigation began following a formal petition filed on October 22, 2026, by a resident of the Gida Dubu area in Bauchi. The petitioner reported that he had been contacted on October 18 by an individual seeking employment as a driver at his pure water factory. The suspect, who presented himself as Private Umar Shehu, claimed to be a member of the 134 Special Forces Battalion, 7 Division, Maimalari Barracks, Borno State.

During a scheduled driving assessment on October 22, the situation escalated. The petitioner alleged that the suspect physically attacked both the factory owner and the son of a neighboring resident. Following the altercation, the suspect reportedly fled the scene with the owner’s white H-Jet vehicle (registration number AE-278-ALK) and a green Infinix Smart 5X mobile phone.

Investigation and Recovery

Following the report, Bauchi police detectives initiated an intelligence-led operation to track the suspect. This effort led to the successful recovery of the stolen vehicle in Jos, the capital of Plateau State. A subsequent search of the suspect resulted in the seizure of various military-grade items, which police believe were used to facilitate the impersonation. These items included:

  • Desert and green camouflage uniforms
  • A jungle hat
  • An Army-issued raincoat
  • A camouflage vest
  • An Army sweater

Official Response and Legal Proceedings

The Commissioner of Police for Bauchi State, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, issued a strong condemnation regarding the incident. He emphasized that the command maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward individuals who attempt to undermine public safety by masquerading as members of security agencies.

The Command will not tolerate criminal impersonation of security agencies to perpetrate crime.

The Commissioner confirmed that the suspect is currently undergoing a thorough investigation. Police officials have stated that the recovered vehicle and the confiscated military gear will be processed as evidence. The suspect is expected to be formally charged and prosecuted in court as the investigation concludes. At this time, no further details regarding the suspect’s legal representation or specific court dates have been released by the authorities.

Conclusion

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces regarding the misuse of military identification and uniforms by civilians. By utilizing intelligence-led policing, the Bauchi State Police Command was able to recover the stolen property and apprehend the suspect, preventing further potential harm. The case remains under active investigation as the state prepares to move forward with formal prosecution.
