A senior media aide to Atiku Abubakar, Phrank Shuaibu, has leveled accusations against
President Bola Tinubu, claiming that the President’s recent Umrah pilgrimage to
Saudi Arabia was motivated by political considerations rather than genuine spiritual
devotion. The remarks, made during an appearance on Channels Television’s _Politics
Today_, have reignited public discourse regarding the intersection of religion and
governance in Nigeria.

## The Allegations Against the President

Shuaibu, who has served as a consistent critic of the current administration, challenged
the sincerity of the President’s faith during the televised interview. He pointed
to the timing and nature of the trip, suggesting that it was utilized as a “political
show” rather than a strictly religious endeavor. According to Shuaibu, the President’s
previous Umrah visit occurred three years ago, a gap he used to question the consistency
of the President’s religious practice.

“Does Bola Tinubu have sincerity of faith?” Shuaibu asked during the broadcast. “
If he did, he would not keep a fellow Muslim, Nasir El-Rufai, in detention over
a minor political disagreement.”

## Context of the Umrah Visit

The Presidency has maintained that the trip to Saudi Arabia was a spiritual exercise.
Umrah is a non-mandatory pilgrimage to Mecca that can be undertaken at any time
of the year, distinct from the Hajj. While the Presidency framed the visit as a
private religious duty, Shuaibu’s comments highlight the skepticism often directed
at the public activities of high-ranking officials in Nigeria, where religious optics
frequently intersect with political narratives.

## Political Background

Phrank Shuaibu has been a prominent voice within Atiku Abubakar’s media team since
the 2023 presidential election cycle. His criticism of President Tinubu is part
of a broader pattern of opposition rhetoric that has characterized the relationship
between the current administration and the camp of the former presidential candidate.
The mention of Nasir El-Rufai’s detention serves as a focal point for this criticism,
linking the President’s religious actions to his handling of political allies and
internal party disputes.

## Conclusion

The accusations made by Shuaibu remain a point of contention between the opposition
and the ruling administration. As of the time of reporting, the Presidency has not
issued a specific rebuttal to these claims regarding the President’s faith or the
motivations behind his travel. The incident underscores the ongoing friction between
the administration and its critics, as well as the sensitivity surrounding the public
display of religious faith by Nigerian political leaders.
