Atiku Abubakar Alleges Campaign Sabotage in Sokoto Ahead of Rally

Olamide

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused state authorities and security agencies of orchestrating a plot to disrupt his party's campaign activities in Sokoto, vowing to proceed with his scheduled rally despite the alleged interference.

Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has leveled serious allegations against the Sokoto State Government and security operatives, claiming a coordinated effort to stifle his party’s campaign activities. During a news conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Abubakar stated that his party has faced systematic denial of access to public facilities and logistical support, which he characterizes as a deliberate attempt to disadvantage the opposition.

Allegations of State-Sponsored Disruption

Abubakar specifically alleged that the Department of State Services (DSS) is involved in recruiting protesters to create disturbances in Sokoto. According to the former Vice President, these actions are intended to manufacture a security crisis that could justify the imposition of a curfew, thereby preventing the ADC rally from proceeding. He pointed to a specific location behind a Zenith Bank branch on Koko Road as an assembly point for these mobilized individuals, claiming that trucks are being used to transport them to key areas to create gridlock and intimidate commuters.

“This is not intelligence work. It is political interference dressed in official uniform,” Abubakar stated, calling on security personnel to abandon political bias and uphold their professional mandate to protect all citizens.

Broader Political Concerns

Beyond the immediate situation in Sokoto, Abubakar criticized the current administration under President Bola Tinubu. He alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is pursuing a strategy of “political absorption” and intimidation designed to weaken opposition parties. Abubakar warned that these tactics threaten to reduce Nigeria to a de facto one-party state, undermining the democratic process as the 2027 elections approach.

He further linked these political maneuvers to the government’s handling of the national economy. Abubakar cited rising costs for food, fuel, electricity, and transportation as evidence of the administration’s failure to address public hardship. He outlined the ADC’s alternative policy proposals, which include:

  • Expanding local production capacity.
  • Increasing food supply chains.
  • Implementing targeted production subsidies for fuel refined within Nigeria.
  • Generating employment opportunities to lower the cost of doing business.

Commitment to the Campaign Trail

Despite the alleged obstacles, Abubakar maintained that his campaign will continue as planned. He confirmed his intention to travel to Sokoto to address supporters, urging residents to remain peaceful and avoid violence. He also issued a warning to security officers, stating that those found participating in efforts to restrict legal political activity would be held accountable under the law.

As of the time of reporting, the Sokoto State Government and the relevant security agencies have not issued a formal response to these specific allegations. The situation remains a focal point for observers tracking the political climate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
