Analyzing the Shift in Nigeria’s Voter Demographics

Recent data from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) shows a significant decline in the youth voter population. We examine the numbers and the factors driving this demographic shift.

Analyzing the Shift in Nigeria’s Voter Demographics

Recent data released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has sparked public discussion regarding the composition of Nigeria’s voter register. While the total number of registered voters has grown, the specific demographic breakdown reveals a notable decrease in the number of young people between the ages of 18 and 34.

Understanding the 2026 Voter Data

According to figures reported by Channels Television, Nigeria’s total voter register grew from 93,469,008 in 2023 to 103,428,715 in 2026. This represents an overall increase of approximately 10.66 percent. However, a closer look at the age distribution highlights a sharp contrast in how different age brackets are represented:

  • Youth (18–34): Declined from 37,060,399 in 2023 to 29,777,578 in 2026, a reduction of 7,282,821 voters.
  • Middle Age (35–49): Increased from 33,413,591 to 43,265,946, an addition of 9,852,355 voters.

The youth category’s share of the total register dropped from 39.6 percent to 28.79 percent over this three-year period, while the middle-age category saw its share rise significantly.

Is This an Administrative Removal?

The decline in youth voters does not necessarily imply that individuals were actively removed from the register. As noted in the report, the passage of time is a primary factor. Voters who were aged 32, 33, and 34 in 2023 would naturally transition into the 35–49 age bracket by 2026. This demographic aging process accounts for a portion of the shift, though it remains unclear if it explains the entirety of the decline.

Contextualizing Growth Trends

Historical data shows that the growth rate of the voter register has been slowing over the last decade. The register grew by 22.04 percent between 2015 and 2019, 11.27 percent between 2019 and 2023, and 10.66 percent between 2023 and 2026. While the absolute number of new voters remains high, the percentage growth is trending downward.

The Need for Clarity

Samson Itodo, Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, suggests that the situation requires a more granular analysis from INEC. To better understand these trends, there is a call for the commission to publish a detailed age-cohort analysis. Such a report would ideally clarify the impact of:

  • New voter registrations
  • Natural age transitions
  • Administrative removals of deceased or unqualified persons

Without this documentation, it is difficult to determine whether the decline stems from a lack of new youth registrations or standard administrative cleanup processes. If the data indicates that young people are not replacing those who age out of the youth category, it may signal a need for renewed efforts in youth mobilization. Conversely, if administrative adjustments are the primary driver, clear communication from the electoral body would be essential to maintain public confidence in the integrity of the voter register.
