Katsina State authorities confirm that all 154 students hospitalized after a mass adverse drug reaction have been discharged, putting an end to reports of fatalities.

The Katsina State Police Command has officially confirmed that all 154 students from the Government Science Secondary School (Boarding) in Batagarawa have fully recovered and been discharged from medical facilities. The announcement follows a concerning medical incident that occurred earlier this week, which had sparked widespread public anxiety and the circulation of unverified reports regarding the students’ safety.

Context of the Medical Incident

According to the official statement released by the Katsina State Police Command, the health crisis began on October 26, 2026. The students were participating in a scheduled Bilharzia treatment and prevention program. During this exercise, the students were administered Praziquantel tablets, a standard medication used to treat parasitic worm infections. Shortly after the administration of the drug, the students began exhibiting adverse reactions, necessitating an urgent evacuation to local health facilities.

Resolution and Hospital Discharge

The situation required immediate medical intervention for a significant number of students. While many were treated and released in the initial days following the incident, 25 students remained under medical observation as in-patients. The Police Command confirmed that these final 25 students have now been successfully treated and discharged. They have since been reunited with their families and returned to their school environment. Authorities report that all 154 affected students are currently in good health and high spirits.

Addressing Misinformation

In the wake of the incident, rumors regarding the outcome of the medical emergency began to circulate, including false claims that some students had died. The Katsina State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq, has explicitly refuted these claims, confirming that there were no fatalities recorded throughout the entire ordeal.

The Command has issued a strong advisory to the public, urging citizens to disregard unverified rumors and to rely exclusively on official channels for information. The Commissioner of Police, CP Ali Umar Fage, commended the residents of the area for their patience and cooperation during the emergency, noting that the public’s calm response was essential while medical teams worked to stabilize the students.

Moving Forward

The Katsina State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and security of the state’s residents. While the immediate health crisis has been resolved, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of verified communication during public health emergencies. As of now, no further details regarding the specific cause of the adverse reaction or the status of the ongoing health program have been provided by the authorities.
