## A Shared ‘Superpower’ of Persuasion

Documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney has spent significant time dissecting the lives
and careers of two of the most polarizing figures in modern technology: Elizabeth
Holmes and Elon Musk. Having directed the 2019 documentary _The Inventor: Out for
Blood in Silicon Valley_, which chronicled the rise and fall of the Theranos founder,
and his latest project, a four-hour deep dive titled _Musk_, Gibney is uniquely
positioned to compare the two.

In a recent interview, Gibney highlighted a striking behavioral overlap between
the billionaire entrepreneur and the disgraced health tech executive. According
to the director, both individuals possess an uncanny ability to exert influence
over others, effectively convincing people of claims that were fundamentally untrue.
Gibney characterized this trait as a form of “superpower,” rooted in an overwhelming
display of confidence.

## The ‘Confidence Man’ Archetype

Reflecting on the production of his latest film, Gibney noted that the concept of
the “confidence man” frequently surfaced in his analysis of Musk. He suggests that,
much like Holmes—who famously promised that her company, Theranos, could perform
a vast array of medical diagnostics using only a minimal sample of blood—Musk has
demonstrated a capacity to sway public and investor opinion through the sheer force
of his own conviction.

The comparison is particularly notable given the vastly different trajectories of
the two figures. Elizabeth Holmes is currently serving a prison sentence following
her conviction for defrauding investors, a downfall precipitated by the collapse
of her company once its technology failed to live up to the lofty promises she had
made. Musk, by contrast, remains one of the wealthiest individuals in the world,
maintaining a massive global platform and continuing to lead multiple high-profile
technology ventures.

## Contextualizing the Comparison

Gibney’s observations focus on the psychological mechanics of their rise to prominence.
By framing their influence as a “superpower,” the filmmaker points to the way both
figures utilized charisma and unwavering certainty to bypass skepticism. In the
case of Holmes, this led to a massive fraud scandal that drew international scrutiny.
Whether the same mechanisms of persuasion will lead to similar scrutiny or different
outcomes for Musk remains a subject of intense public and critical debate.

As Gibney’s latest documentary explores the complexities of Musk’s career, the director’s
comparison serves as a lens through which to view the broader culture of Silicon
Valley and the power dynamics that allow such figures to command immense influence,
regardless of the veracity of their claims.
