Airbnb Superhost Backs New Policy Limiting Guest Chores
As Airbnb implements new restrictions on checkout requirements, one experienced Superhost argues that guests should not be burdened with cleaning duties, emphasizing that hospitality should remain the priority.
A Shift in Hosting Culture
Airbnb has recently introduced a new policy aimed at curbing the extensive chore lists that some hosts have historically imposed on guests before checkout. The move has sparked significant debate across social media platforms, with many users expressing relief that the era of mandatory pre-departure cleaning may be coming to an end. Among those welcoming the change is Elana Rabinowitz, a Hudson Valley-based Superhost with a 4.97-star rating and five years of experience in the rental market.
Rabinowitz, who has maintained her Superhost status since 2023, believes the industry lost sight of the fundamental “B&B” concept. She argues that when guests pay for a stay, they should not be expected to perform labor-intensive tasks. According to Rabinowitz, the final memory of a vacation should not be a checklist of chores, but rather the experience of the stay itself.
Moving Away from Strict Checklists
For years, the standard practice at many properties included requests for guests to strip beds, start laundry, or perform deep cleaning before leaving. Rabinowitz notes that while her property management company previously encouraged stricter rules, she moved away from such demands in 2025. Her current expectations are minimal: guests are simply asked to turn off the lights and return the key to the lockbox.
The Superhost acknowledges that some property owners feel compelled to enforce chores due to the tight turnover windows between bookings. She admits that managing time between guests can be stressful, but suggests that the solution lies in operational adjustments—such as keeping extra linens and dishes on hand—rather than offloading the work onto the paying guest.
The Balance of Hospitality and Responsibility
While some hosts fear that removing these requirements will lead to properties being left in disarray, Rabinowitz’s personal experience suggests otherwise. Over the course of 90 guest reviews, she has found that the vast majority of visitors are naturally respectful of the space. She emphasizes that hosts already have the ability to set cleaning fees upfront, which should cover the professional turnover process.
Rabinowitz also points out that the platform still provides a mechanism for hosts to rate the cleanliness of their guests, which serves as a natural deterrent against leaving a property in poor condition. She argues that leaving a bag of trash behind should not result in a host penalizing a guest’s rating, as it falls within the scope of standard cleaning services.
Prioritizing the Guest Experience
For Rabinowitz, hosting is a personal endeavor rather than a purely financial one. By vetting guests personally and providing thoughtful welcome gifts, she aims to foster a positive environment that encourages return visits. She notes that she has already secured repeat bookings, including a mother-daughter duo returning for their third consecutive year.
By removing the burden of chores, Rabinowitz believes hosts can ensure that guests leave with fond memories. As the industry adapts to these new guidelines, she remains optimistic that the focus will shift back to genuine hospitality, ensuring that guests are treated as visitors rather than unpaid staff.
