Airbnb CEO Dismisses AI Agent Threat as Booking Numbers Remain Negligible
Brian Chesky remains unfazed by the rise of general-purpose AI agents like Muse and Instinct, noting that they have yet to impact Airbnb's booking volume.
AI Agents Fail to Disrupt Travel Bookings
As the tech industry continues to experiment with autonomous AI agents, Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky has publicly downplayed the threat these tools pose to the travel industry. During the company’s third-quarter earnings call, Chesky addressed the emergence of AI assistants such as Meta’s Muse and the viral Instinct agent, stating that they have generated minimal traffic and even fewer actual bookings for the platform.
While these AI agents have gained attention for their ability to handle routine tasks, their impact on the travel sector remains statistically insignificant. Chesky noted that of the nearly 500,000 bookings processed by Airbnb on a daily basis, the number originating from these AI agents is “very non-material.” Furthermore, traffic data indicates that interest in using these agents for travel peaked in early October and has since plateaued.
The Aspirational Nature of Travel Planning
Chesky argues that the fundamental nature of travel planning is at odds with the current capabilities and design of general-purpose AI agents. He emphasized that for most travelers, the process of planning a trip is an aspirational and engaging experience rather than a chore to be offloaded to an algorithm.
“Travel is aspirational. Discovering where to go and where to stay is part of the experience,” Chesky explained. According to company data, approximately 80% of travelers report that they enjoy the time spent planning their trips. This is reflected in user behavior on the Airbnb platform, where travelers frequently browse through dozens of photos per listing and engage in direct communication with hosts—a step taken by 90% of users.
The CEO also highlighted the “secretive” nature of travel planning, noting that a significant portion of Airbnb traffic occurs during standard work hours. “These people are supposed to be working, and they’re not,” Chesky remarked, suggesting that the act of browsing homes is a form of escapism that users are not yet ready to delegate to an automated assistant.
Airbnb’s Strategic Pivot to Specialized AI
Despite his skepticism regarding general-purpose agents, Chesky is not dismissing the potential of artificial intelligence entirely. He views the technology as an opportunity for discovery, comparing the role of AI agents to search engines like Google, which can act as a bridge to drive potential guests to the platform.
Looking ahead, Airbnb is preparing to enter the AI space on its own terms. The company plans to launch a specialized AI agent in the first half of next year. Unlike the general-purpose agents currently on the market, which are designed for simple tasks like scheduling appointments or booking restaurant tables, Airbnb’s upcoming tool will be purpose-built for the travel industry to provide a more tailored guest experience.
Industry-Wide Trends
Airbnb is not alone in its assessment of the current AI landscape. Other major players in the travel and delivery sectors have reported similar findings. Executives at Booking.com and Expedia have both indicated during recent earnings calls that AI agents have resulted in negligible traffic for their platforms. Additionally, DoorDash CEO Tony Xu recently shared that third-party AI agents had accounted for only a few hundred orders in total, reinforcing the sentiment that the technology has yet to achieve widespread adoption for consumer transactions.
For now, Airbnb remains in a strong financial position, reporting a 19% year-over-year revenue increase for the third quarter. The company characterized this performance as its fastest growth in three years, signaling that it is firmly back in a growth phase despite the rapid evolution of the AI market.
