Adamawa Farmers Stage Protest Over Crop Destruction in Song Local Government Area

October 13, 2026 · Olamide

Farmers from multiple communities in Adamawa State’s Song Local Government Area have staged a protest demanding government intervention over alleged crop destruction by grazing cattle.

Farmers across multiple communities in the Song Local Government Area of Adamawa State have staged a demonstration to voice urgent concerns regarding the destruction of their crops, according to a report by Daily Post Nigeria. The demonstrators assembled at the local government headquarters in Song town to demand official protection against livestock intruding onto their cultivated lands.

Demonstrators Seek Government Intervention

The gathering brought together agricultural workers from several settlements across the council area, including Orr Mountain, Djarakin, Didango, Loko, Kichiu, Hombo, Garin-Tuwo, and Balma. Participants carried signs calling directly on state leadership, notably Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, to intervene before their livelihoods are further degraded.

According to the demonstrators, cattle are being permitted to roam directly into planted fields, consuming and trampling harvests that communities rely on for sustenance and income. The farmers emphasized that they were seeking peaceful resolution through formal channels, carrying placards that urged authorities to safeguard agricultural tracts and ensure lasting stability across rural settlements.

Local Council Pledges Administrative Action

At the Song Council Secretariat, municipal representatives received the protesting farmers to hear their demands directly. Vincent Baldeno, the information officer for the council, addressed the assembly on behalf of the Executive Chairman, Idris Yahaya.

As reported by Daily Post Nigeria, Baldeno assured the farming communities that their grievances would be forwarded immediately to higher state authorities for assessment. While acknowledging the gravity of the reported losses, the council official appealed to the demonstrators to maintain civil order and avoid taking unilateral actions, promising that administrative measures would be introduced to address the disputes between crop growers and livestock owners.

An Unusual Dispute in a Typically Quiet District

The demonstration marks a notable shift for Song Local Government Area, an administrative division widely recognized within Adamawa State for its relative tranquility. While several regions across central and northern Nigeria frequently record recurring frictions between mobile pastoralists and settled farming populations over water and land access, Song has historically avoided significant security incidents.

Local observers noted via Daily Post that the council area rarely features in security bulletins concerning rural violence, communal disputes, or insurgency. Because the area has typically maintained stable co-existence, the emergence of formal protests highlights increasing pressure on shared natural resources as harvesting seasons proceed.

Neither local officials nor pastoralist groups have published specific estimates detailing the financial or acre-level scope of the alleged damage. For now, local leaders have placed the focus on dialogue, urging both farming communities and livestock managers to observe established administrative mechanisms while awaiting state-level directives.
