Abia Police Station Targeted in Fatal Nighttime Attack: What We Know
Two senior officers were killed and three inspectors injured after unidentified gunmen attacked a divisional police headquarters with explosives in Abia State.
Law enforcement authorities in Abia State have moved to re-establish control in the Uratta-Eziukwu area of Aba North Local Government Area following a deadly early-morning assault on a divisional police station, according to a report by Channels Television.
The raid, carried out by unidentified armed individuals, resulted in the deaths of two senior police officers and left three police inspectors wounded. The wounded personnel were taken to a medical facility for treatment.
Details of the Early-Morning Raid
According to an official statement issued by the Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, and cited by Channels Television, the attack occurred at approximately 2:26 a.m. on a Saturday.
The attackers deployed explosives during the incursion, sparking a blaze that damaged a portion of the divisional headquarters as well as an official police patrol vehicle. Despite the destruction, police officials confirmed that the assailants did not succeed in taking any weapons or ammunition from the facility.
Tactical Response and Government Assessment
Following the breach, the Abia State Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, mobilized tactical teams to the location to comb the surrounding neighborhood and reassert order. State authorities, including Abia State Governor Alex Otti, later arrived at the divisional headquarters to inspect the physical damage caused by the attackers.
The police command confirmed that an expanded security operation is currently underway to identify and apprehend the suspects. While expressing condolences to the families of the fallen officers, police officials urged local residents to remain vigilant and share any credible intelligence that could aid the ongoing investigation. The specific identities and motives of the attackers have not been officially disclosed.
Wider Pressure on Security Personnel
The lethal confrontation in Aba North reflects ongoing security risks faced by law enforcement and military personnel across different regions of Nigeria. Channels Television noted several recent incidents targeting security outfits, including a lethal attack in Yobe State five months prior that claimed the lives of 17 officers at an army training facility, as well as separate attacks in Plateau State’s Barkin Ladi and Mangu areas that claimed multiple lives, including that of a police officer.
Abia State has also experienced prior violence against patrol units, including a November 2024 incident along Asaga Road in the Ohafia Local Government Area that resulted in an officer’s death.
Current Status
While calm has reportedly returned to the immediate vicinity of the Uratta-Eziukwu station, tactical deployments remain active in the area. Law enforcement officials have not yet announced any arrests in connection with the attack, and further official updates are awaited as forensic reviews and field searches proceed.
