Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has publicly challenged the prevailing societal
trend of prioritizing the recognition of questionable figures, calling for a systemic
change in how the state celebrates its citizens. Speaking during the 90th birthday
celebration of Emeritus Professor Benson Oluikpe in Umuahia, the Governor emphasized
that public honors should be reserved for those whose lives serve as a moral compass
for the younger generation.

## Redefining Public Recognition

According to a report by _Channels Television_, Governor Otti expressed strong disapproval
of the culture that frequently elevates individuals associated with fraud or illicit
activities. He argued that the state must move away from honoring such figures,
suggesting that the current trend undermines the values of hard work and ethical
conduct. Instead, the administration intends to focus on celebrating individuals
who have made verifiable, positive contributions to society.

The Governor highlighted that this shift in focus is not merely symbolic but a strategic
effort to influence the youth. By elevating role models who have achieved excellence
in their respective fields, the government hopes to provide a blueprint for success
that is rooted in integrity rather than expediency.

## Promoting Excellence Over Expediency

Governor Otti pointed to recent state-led initiatives as evidence of this new direction.
He cited the recent celebration of five Abia schoolchildren who achieved victory
at an international competition in Qatar as a primary example of how the state aims
to promote positive values. By spotlighting these young achievers, the administration
seeks to foster an environment where academic and professional excellence is the
primary metric for public acclaim.

The Governor also shared a personal anecdote from 1989, recalling how his father
demanded an account of the source of funds he had sent home while employed at Citibank.
This experience, he noted, serves as a foundational lesson in the importance of
accountability. He urged parents across the state to adopt a similar approach, encouraging
them to question the sources of their children’s wealth to discourage the normalization
of unexplained riches.

## A Commitment to Meritocracy

During the event, Emeritus Professor Benson Oluikpe, who was being honored for his
90th birthday, praised the Governor’s focus on humility and wisdom. Oluikpe, who
has known the Governor since his time in the banking sector, urged public office
holders to remain grounded and to prioritize the welfare of humanity over the trappings
of power. He also cautioned against the dangers of sycophancy, advising the Governor’s
associates to prioritize truth-telling over flattery.

Looking ahead, Governor Otti announced plans to honor an Abia-born scientist based
in the United States this coming December. This individual, a professor and inventor
recognized for developing technology that aids in targeting cancer cells, represents
the type of achievement the administration intends to champion. The Governor stated
that these recognitions would be merit-based, transcending political, religious,
or geographical boundaries.

## Conclusion

While the Governor’s stated policy marks a clear departure from the status quo,
the practical implementation of these standards remains a developing initiative.
By explicitly linking public recognition to moral integrity, the Abia State government
is attempting to reshape the social narrative regarding success and influence. Whether
this shift will successfully diminish the influence of questionable characters remains
to be seen, but the administration has signaled that it intends to use the state’s
platform to actively promote a culture of transparency and merit.
