Halloween has long been a staple of the social calendar, serving as a unique blend
of community tradition, creative expression, and seasonal celebration. While the
core elements of the holiday—trick-or-treating and spooky costumes—remain timeless,
the way people engage with the season has shifted significantly over the last century.
Archival records and vintage photography offer a fascinating glimpse into these
evolving customs.

## The Evolution of Party Games and Community Spirit

In the mid-20th century, Halloween was often defined by simple, interactive gatherings.
During the 1930s and 1940s, party games were central to the festivities. One of
the most iconic activities was bobbing for apples, a tradition that spanned generations
and social circles. Whether it was children in Little Italy, New York, in 1939 or
U.S. servicemen at a 1943 party in Beekman Place, the game served as a quintessential
seasonal pastime.

As the decades progressed, the focus shifted toward public displays of creativity.
By the 1960s, elementary school costume parades became a standard feature of the
holiday, allowing children to showcase elaborate outfits, ranging from traditional
princess gowns to popular superhero personas like Spider-Man. This spirit of community
engagement also extended to charitable efforts; for instance, in 1971, cyclists
participated in the ‘Halloween Maximus 500’ to raise funds for UNICEF.

## From Glitter Paint to Pop Culture Icons

The aesthetic of Halloween underwent a dramatic transformation in the 1970s. While
earlier decades leaned into homemade charm, the 1970s introduced a more flamboyant
style, characterized by the heavy use of glitter paint. This era also saw the holiday
deeply integrated into pop culture, with television programs like _The Sonny & Cher
Comedy Hour_ dedicating entire episodes to the spooky season.

Celebrity influence played a major role in shaping the holiday’s public image during
this time. High-profile events at venues like Studio 54 and the Magic Castle in
Hollywood saw stars like Jane Fonda and John Ritter celebrating in elaborate costumes.
Even professional sports were not immune to the festive spirit, with baseball players
occasionally donning masks on the field during games held near the holiday, as seen
in 1986.

## Modern Trends and Economic Impact

As Halloween has moved into the 21st century, it has become a massive economic engine.
According to the National Retail Federation, American spending on the holiday is
projected to reach a record $13.5 billion this year. Despite this increase in total
expenditure, consumer behavior is shifting; reports indicate that shoppers are increasingly
favoring discount stores over specialty costume shops or online retailers.

The holiday has also maintained its role as a platform for political and social
expression. From the 1980s, when masks of presidential candidates became a staple
of the season, to modern drag shows and community-focused events, the holiday continues
to mirror the cultural climate of the time. Whether it is a First Lady reading stories
to promote literacy or students cheering on their favorite sports teams in costume,
the spirit of Halloween remains rooted in the simple desire to celebrate and have
fun.
