Governor Mbah Urges South East Development Commission to Prioritise Rail, Gas Pipelines, and Industrial Growth
Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has called on the South East Development Commission to focus on regional railway lines, gas pipeline connectivity, and industrial initiatives following talks with a Senate committee.

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has urged the newly established South East Development Commission (SEDC) to direct its strategic focus toward critical cross-state infrastructure, specifically regional railway links, natural gas distribution pipelines, and industrial expansion programs.
According to a report by Premium Times Nigeria, the governor articulated these priorities on Monday during a meeting with members of the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission. The delegation was led by the committee’s chairman, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, visiting as part of parliamentary engagements surrounding the commission’s takeoff.
Targeting Strategic Infrastructure
Governor Mbah highlighted that long-term economic revitalisation across southeastern Nigeria relies heavily on foundational infrastructure that individual states cannot easily execute in isolation. Connecting the commercial centres of the region via efficient transport and energy networks has remained a major economic goal for policymakers.
By pressing for gas pipeline distribution and regional railway systems, Mbah framed energy access and bulk transport connectivity as prerequisites for sustainable manufacturing and commerce. Accessible natural gas supplies are widely seen as essential for cutting power generation costs for local manufacturers, while passenger and freight rail networks would facilitate trade corridors across the geopolitical zone.
Collaboration with the SEDC
The South East Development Commission was created through federal legislation to rebuild infrastructure, address environmental concerns, and stimulate regional economic potential. The visit by Senator Kalu’s committee signals the start of legislative oversight and coordination with subnational leaders to align the commission’s eventual budget and projects with state development priorities.
While Governor Mbah urged the commission to actively partner on industrial initiatives, the report did not specify financial commitments, project timelines, or specific alignments for the proposed railway and gas pipeline projects. Technical blueprints and formal operational plans for the commission’s initial interventions remain to be released publicly by the commission’s management and the federal legislature.
Regional Economic Context
The calls for regional integration come as state governments in the South East explore avenues to expand domestic revenue, attract foreign direct investment, and support small-to-medium manufacturing hubs. Poor power reliability and high haulage costs on deteriorating highway networks have long hindered industrial competitiveness in the area.
Governor Mbah’s administration in Enugu has pursued ambitious economic growth targets, and regional cooperation through the SEDC could provide a framework to address cross-border infrastructural deficits. However, the extent to which the federal commission can fund and execute large-scale ventures such as inter-state rail and major gas distribution remains contingent on federal budgetary allocations and public-private partnerships.
Next Steps
Coordination between the Senate committee, the commission’s executives, and state governors is expected to continue as the SEDC establishes its programmatic roadmap. Observers and regional industry stakeholders will be monitoring whether the commission adopts large-scale transport and energy networks as formal priorities in its upcoming fiscal proposals.
